About the Author
Alexander S. White is an attorney, writer, and amateur photographer. He is the co-author of David Busch's Canon PowerShot G10/G11 Guide to Digital Photography, and author of PHOTOGRAPHER'S GUIDE TO THE LEICA D-LUX 4: GETTING THE MOST FROM LEICA'S COMPACT DIGITAL CAMERA and DAUNTLESS MARINE: JOSEPH SAILER JR., DIVE-BOMBING ACE OF GUADALCANAL. He began his life-long interest in photography as a teenager, when he was fortunate enough to have his own darkroom in his parents' house in Philadelphia. He also discovered the magic of Super-8 cinematography, and coerced his friends into making numerous amateur productions. He later ventured into the production of sound films and went on to major in Communication at Stanford University, concentrating in Broadcasting and Film, before serving in the U.S. Army and later attending the University of Pennsylvania Law School. His other interests include genealogy; he maintains a family history website and continues to do research into his family's ancestry. He lives near Richmond, Virginia, with his wife, Clenise.

Very helpful

This book has unlocked my camera. I had used the on-line manual quite a bit but was still just shooting in "auto" as the on-line documentation was difficult for me to follow. This book tells how to use the many features of the RX10M2 and when to use them. Well worth the money. Sony could and should do much better with the documentation. Wonderful guide to this camera.

what features are useful and which are not

This book is essential in understanding the camera. Without it I would be lost. The author takes you through all the menus and options the camera has to offer. He recommends, through his personal experience, what features are useful and which are not. I enjoyed sitting down with the book and camera in my lap and trying all the settings and features the author describes. Well organized and well written.

Extremely useful guide

As noted in previous reviews and comments, this guide is extremely useful. It is useful as a plant guide in its intended region (and surrounding regions likely) and also as a general model for how to construct plant guides that are useful. Its key features are good organization of plants by features to identify them, inclusion of BOTH line drawings and photographs of each species, inclusion of numerous types of plants (grasses, mosses, etc) rather than only 'wildflowers' like so many less useful guides, and well-done and interesting descriptions of the plants (including ethnobotany information, such as how humans have used the plants). Among plant guides, this simply has been one of the most useful purchases I have made. Also, the publisher (Lone Pine) has published guides for some other regions. This publisher's guides generally are among the best, as many of them contain the excellent features listed above. The utility of having both a line drawing and a photograph of a species to identify it cannot be understated.

Review of Forest Plants of Central Ontario

I used this plant guide in Killarney Provincial Park (Ontario) and found it useful for identifying major plant species of the area. This guide is interesting because it includes both a photograph and a line drawing of each plant featured in the guide. Plants are divided into lifeforms (e.g., shrub) and descriptions of each plant within a lifeform are contained in a separate section of the guide. The keys for plant identification are not detailed, but the objective of this book is to provide a simple, non-technical guide for plant identification. The authors meet this objective. For more detailed plant identification, a technical botanical guide (Michigan Flora by Ed Voss) probably should be used instead of Forest Plants of Central Ontario. I recommend Forest Plants of Central Ontario as an interesting, non-technical guide for identifying major plant species of the region. It is appropriate for more advanced botanists as a handy field guide and is also appropriate for investigators who have no formal botanical training but who want to quickly learn to identify plants.

From trees to liverworts in one book

This book covers a small area of Eastern North America, so it is easier to identify plants that you might find in say the Ottawa Valley, without ploughing through all the plants that only occur further south. It includes trees, shrubs, herbs, grasses, sedges & rushes, ferns & allies, mosses & liverworts and lichens, all in one book. For the non-botanist this is the best book for this area (including West Quebec). Unlike other wildflower books that concentrate on flowers, this shows and describes leaves and fruits, making identification easier at times when there are no flowers. Charts and keys at the start of each section help in identification.

Great for first year medical students!

Great companion to the Rohen textbook. If you enjoy testing yourself before an anatomy exam or practical, I highly recommend these cards. I have not found any issues yet with accuracy. The board-style questions at the bottom of some of the cards are also very helpful.

Videoscribe for Dummies- Exactly what I was looking for

It's so simple that my eight year old creates them too!"- written on the first few pages by author Tracie Rollins.....that was enough to push me over the edge and into the world of attempting to build my own animations. As a business owner and member of a tech-heavy family, I LOVE the idea and presentation of the whiteboard animation, but have been afraid to dive in. VIDEOSCRIBE A BEGINNER'S GUIDE

A Great Resource for Learning How to Video Scribe

I received a copy of this book to preview for this post. Although I personally know the author, I have to say that this book was very easy to read. It's comprehensive and contains everything I wanted to know and more. I was able to read this book in one day and feel confident that I can use my new found knowledge to create a video scribe. Tracie makes it easy to learn this software, especially since there isn't an existing manual.

A Game Winner

"Fair Game" is another winner from Josh Lanyon. It's a well-crafted and action-packed mystery of course, involving the disappearance first, of a student of college professor Elliot MiIls, and then other young men from the college campus where he teaches courses in History and Film. Mills has a history of his own, as a former ambitious "hotshot FBI agent" who retired from the Bureau after a receiving crippling gunshot wound. When asked by the parents of his missing student to act as their "consultant" in dealing with the FBI, Mills finds himself dealing with the formidable, handsome Agent Tucker Lance, with whom he has a personal history. Because of the nature and outcome of their past association, neither man is at all happy to have to work with one another.

The college setting, which Lanyon renders in characteristically believable detail,
allows him to take some fun satirical jabs at pretentious academic and artistic gobbledegook, not to mention the behavior of vapid young coeds trying to butter up the professor. As in Lanyon's other stories, someone is always cooking, in this case a delicious saute of mushrooms in butter. Before too long, someone should be able to compile a Josh Lanyon cookbook.

Will Elliot and Tucker find a way to cooperate without constantly making each other angry because of the unresolved issues in their mutual past? Will Elliot survive the increasing violent anonymous threats he receives? Lanyon skillfully ratchets up the suspense in both areas.

For those readers new to Lanyon, this writer creates exciting physical action sequences as good or better as anything in the Jason Bourne series. And the bedroom action is pretty exciting as well. But Lanyon also touches on a theme he has investigated in his other work, notably the Adrien English series and also in his muy caliente, muy apasionado "Mexican Heat." How can two strong-willed males get past anger, pride, and misunderstanding to find a balanced relationship? In "Fair Game," Lanyon suggests the recipe includes a dash of humility, as well as trust and love. Don't wait another minute to read this excellent story.

Fantastic!

Enjoyed every moment of this book, as other reviewer had said, mystery is solid (I was so so happy to be fooled about the identity of the villain) and characters are well drawn and likeable. And I really loved the ending, loved that writer allowed a bit more warm and content feel than he does in some of his other books, often he leaves a lot to imagination and it is good, but I enjoyed hearing characters actually say on page what I wanted them to say to each other.

Great writing from Josh Lanyon

Elliot Mills is a former FBI agent who is now a college professor after a terrible knee injury while on duty took him away from the job that he loved. The injury also took him away from his lover and FBI agent Tucker Lance. Their affair might have been a brief one, but it was a passionate one that appears to have ended badly. When boys start going missing on campus, Elliot can't help himself with being drawn into the cases at the request of his father and the campus president. Little did Elliot know when he agreed to help that it would force him into close contact with Tucker.

In Fair Game, I believe Josh Lanyon does exactly what he does best - provides an interesting and fast paced mystery with well-rounded character development for all the major players and then still manages to throw in the heat and emotion amongst Elliot and Tucker that always give the reader a little hope things will work out for the two of them without the their relationship casting a shadow over the mystery plot. The pain and loneliness Elliot feels from the loss of his beloved job, his lover, and the way he has had to come to grips with a debilitating injury just oozes right off the pages. The mystery surrounding the missing boys is not one that the reader immediately figures out what is going on - it unfolds slowly but is still kept interesting. And best of all, each character has their own uniqueness and own voice which keeps the story fresh.

What I really liked about this book aside from the well written mystery that kept the pages turning is the way you see the communication between Elliot and Tucker start to blossom. It was clear that so much had been unsaid in the time since Elliot's injury that when the two men slowly start to open up to each other and not be afraid to communicate it's a beautiful thing.

If you have not read a Josh Lanyon book before, I think Fair Game would be a great way to start. It is a stand alone book (I would love another!), fast paced, and I think gives a good example of what one should expect from a Lanyon book.

Excellent introduction.. I would like the rest of the book!!

Excellent introduction.. I would like the rest of the book!! This introduction has some excellent arguments on irreducible complexity, explaining that the science during Darwin's day contained a lot of hypothesis and did not take into account DNA or other modern scientific developments and understanding. Those modern developments call into question suppositions in the theory. This information should be presented in every classroom, for young, inquiring minds to look at so that they have the modern scientific evidence of today rather than just a theory and hypothesis. As the summary for A states: "Without a preening gland, birds cannot function with feathers. Without a unique muscular apparatus, special breathing and hollow bones, flight would not be possible. There is no evidence in the fossil record to show developing stages from reptiles to birds. We would expect to see a number of intermediary forms, but all we do see is complete creatures." Worth reading and pondering, this book is on my Top Shelf, and I will be looking for the rest of the publication as soon as it becomes available. I HIGHLY recommend this for its down to earth, easily understood explanations and clear reasoning - it is a title worth your while to read, absorb, understand and ponder.
