highly recommended!!!

This book has completely changed the way I think about backpacking. How much crap people tend to bring is so unnecessary (which I guess is fine, to each his own). But if you are interested in not having such a rough time hiking because of all the weight I couldn't recommend this book more. My goal is not get my backpack weight down to around 20 pounds for a couple day trip and it's fun to work on.

A bit about the author: He is a very very experienced hiker and backpacker. So you know what he has to say he has really thought through and experimented with. The other is that he seems to hate things being marketed and sold, so you know that he isn't trying to sell you anything. He even goes so far as to tell you how to make things like tarp tents and backpacks that are super light and really cheap to make, assuming you have a sowing machine.

Light weight backpacking guide

This book is in large part outdated from the available commercial equipment point of view.
However the book is very well organized and very well written, regardless how
opinionated it is.
The material is written for a chronic light (no) weight fanatic, not an enthusiast.
I am an advocate for light weight bacpacking, in most part because I am getting older, but without crossing into the field of being anal about it. The appropriate title of this book should be "Beyond Minimalism in backpacking".

Wonderful hiking book - provocative, idiosyncratic, engaging

In this book, Ray Jardine lays out his tested and true methods of backpacking. The book is very personal. Reviewers who complain that it is preachy are taking it wrongly, in my opinion. RJ states how he does it, what he has found that works for him, and he shares it with the reader. I don't think it's meant to be a backpacker's `bible', rather one man's account of a very successful system (RJ has thousands of hiking miles logged to back it up). The same goes for the more philosophical passages. Personally, I find them refreshing and relevant reminders of the real purpose and benefit of getting out on the trail.
Folks who trash the book because they've found a bit of advice or two that won't work for them are throwing the baby out with the bathwater. And they may be misinterpreting what is being said. Does anybody really think that RJ wouldn't understand the impracticality of using an umbrella in a sideways-blowing gale? Would it comfort these small minds if RJ prefaced every sentence with "in my opinion, under certain circumstances..."? Can a personal statement be made in print, or is "one size fits all" the ordure of the day?
Don't want to drink untreated water? Then don't. But obviously, using the guidelines for evaluating water sources outlined in the book, this man has, evidently without serious consequence. There's no guarantee- it's up to you to deal with the risk or not.
I learned a lot, and was provoked into considering all of my gear and my entire approach to hiking. More valuably, I got a close look at one independent-thinking and very accomplished hiker's system. No, it all won't work for me. I will not, under normal circumstances, sleep with all my insulation layers on in order to save weight on my quilt or bag (too uncomfortable). Ray does. I can understand and tolerate this difference in preference without deriding the author as some kind of charlatan or crackpot.
This is an excellent book, worth reading for any serious backpacker. I do believe it is more relevant to a long distance hiker than someone out for a weekend, but having a lighter and more comfortable hiking experience is a goal worth pursuing in either case. Perhaps above all, this book encourages self-reliance (making one's own gear, discovering things that work through actually trying them, etc.) and finding one's own way rather than relying on second-hand information (most insidiously from advertising). I'm grateful to Ray and Jenny for this book. Essential for the backpacker's bookshelf.

Excellent EM primer

I actually had the opportunity to receive instruction from Prof. Bozzola in both Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and acquired the book for those reasons. It is not common to find even a textbook with such well-detailed instructions from beginning level to advanced for a myriad of topics in the field. Of course, there is a very significant focus on biological applications, so some portions of the book are not entirely relevant to materials science folks like myself. This book covers the basics of optics, sample preparation, imaging, photography and film developing, and specifics about both TEMs and SEMs. This book is a very good investment for anyone intending to perform work with such instruments.

This is a great book for those entering the field of EM study. It takes you step by step through both SEM and TEM sample prep and analysis. It is packed with helpful pictures and diagrams. It will be a book you will refer to for methodology and protocal from fixation to sectioning...I really love this book.

About the Author
Naomi E. Balaban, a reference librarian for more than twenty-five years at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, has extensive experience in the areas of science and consumer health. She edited, with James Bobick, "The Handy Science Answer Book, The Handy Anatomy Answer Book," and "The Handy Biology Answer Book." She has a background in linguistics and a master s degree in library science.
James Bobick recently retired after sixteen years as Head of the Science and Technology Department at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. During the same time, he taught the science resources course in the School of Information Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh. He recently co-authored, with G. Lynn Berard of Carnegie Mellon University, "Science and Technology Resources: A Guide for Information Professionals and Researchers." He has master s degrees in both biology and library science.

Perfect Collection of Photographs

I have pruchased this book in 1996 and have enjoyed every single page. If you are a seaman and are fond of old steam ships, which are becoming rare museum pieces, this is the perfect book to have alook at them. Especially the Imperial Yachts of the Sultans, their graceful lines and splendor are noteworthy. I have met the authors and thanked them personally for their outstanding work and I would like to repeat my thanks to them here once again.

A genuine piece of Turkish Delight - savour it!

This book is an absolute delight, opening up a vista into a long-gone world when Turkey hovered on the brink of embracing modernity but, in those pre-Ataturk days, never gathered the courage for the final plunge. The numerous high-quality photographs are as valuable for the picture they give of a vanished society as for the technical content. Grave moustachioed and befezzed officers and smart-looking seamen look at the camera across immaculately holystoned decks, obviously proud of their custodianship of the products of British, German and French shipyards and armaments workshops - images which are in many cases at sharp variance with the actuality of venality, corruption and inefficiency that governed their daily lives (The story in the text of Ottoman seamen stranded at a German shipyard, and practically destitute, as the funds do not become available to pay for the refurbishment of their ship, is especially pathetic). Those who love Turkey and the Turks will enjoy these photographs even if they have little interest in naval history - the views of ports, shipyards and the Golden Horn are quite splendid. The book is in fact in three main sections - an introductory text, a superb collection of photographs and a technical appendix that provides not just specifications and brief histories of every ship to serve in the Ottoman navy in the period covered, but also excellent general arrangement drawings and hull lines for many of them. This book is one that is to be treasured by anybody with an interest in naval matters of the ironclad and pre-World War 1 age. I have enjoyed it since I have purchased it and will regard it as a source of valuable reference and entertainment for years to come. Buy it!

Brief history, lots of pictures, and powerful images

Although not enough commentary on the pictures abundant in this book, the rare collections themselves are stunning and spoke directly to you of a once mighty Utsmani Devlet. You have to focus hard and connect the scattered pieces of facts in order to make some arguments from this remarkable work.
To get the best out of this book you'll need to read a few introductory works on the Utsmani period of modern navy, plus some history on the Persian Gulf, the Red Sea, Western Mediterranean, and the Indian Ocean. Yes, surprisingly, they actually controlled much of those waters then.

More well-meaning New Age psychopop from the author of Guilt is the Teacher, Love is the Lesson (1990), etc. According to psychologist Borysenko, who tends to gush, her ``soul has burned with the question why''--specifically, why does God allow suffering? The answer is found in this, as she puts it, ``extraordinarily special'' book that offers a ``new and much needed psychology'' of healing--new, that is, if one has never cracked open a self-help book or watched Oprah, Phil, or Sally. Borysenko's basic premise is, in fact, as old as the hills: that suffering is ``an opportunity for soul growth.'' She tries valiantly to situate this idea in world religious thought, but she constantly mangles her sources--for instance, repeatedly misreading John of the Cross's ``dark night of the soul,''which refers to an aridity that comes in advanced stages of contemplation, as equivalent to psychological disorders (in Borysenko's own case, a childhood bout with compulsive-obsessive disorder). On the other hand, Borysenko does know her transpersonal psychology, and the book teems with condensations of the ideas of Larry Dossey, John Bradshaw, Stanislav Grof, et al., as well as innumerable plugs for Borysenko's earlier volumes. Despite minor differences, all these writers broadcast the same idea: that spiritual growth is possible but takes effort, including the overcoming of fear, addiction, and other deep-seated traumas. As for methodology, Borysenko seems fond of women's confessional groups, men's drumming groups, and, above all, past-life therapy (we travel back to medieval Britain, among other locales). She's keen on meditation as well, and offers a watered-down, de-Christian-ized version of centering prayer, and a watered-down, de-Buddhist-ized version of walking meditation. Lukewarm . . .

Joan Borysenko's book, Fire in the Soul, is a fairly decent book, but on which I feel is redundant of some of her previous books.
There's more meditations in this one, and even more psychological background and information. What's more, she tries to expand a bit on the spiritual theme. I like the fact that she mixes psychology with spirituality, and this would be a fine book if she didn't write it already. This book is more or less, Guilt Is The Teacher, Love Is The Lesson, all over again. She restates many stories and themes from that book in this one, and she even touches upon her other book, Minding the Body, Mending the Mind. She goes a bit further in the spiritual vein by exploring the idea of reincarnation, and her own personal experiences with this subject. Besides that, much of this was read before if you have read her other books.
If you haven't read her other books, you may very well enjoy this one. However, for me, one of the shining points in this book was the sections titled: Night Lights. This is a section on some ancient sayings and lyrical prose, and I found many of these saying quite inspirational.

Very highly recommended

Friends have been telling me for years that I am entirely too pessimistic. With an eye toward changing, I searched the local bookstore shelves a book that presents a balanced spiritual optimism. FIRE IN THE SOUL by Joan Borysenko, Ph.D seemed to meet my needs exactly. Certainly the concept that every difficult experience provides an opportunity for soul growth is not new to me. But Borysenko has a gift for presenting familiar material in a way that is refreshing and revitalizing as she points to the paths that allow the pain of soul making to lead to deep healing.
One of the most profound concepts of FIRE IN THE SOUL is that it is the stories that we tell ourselves that determine how we recover from painful experiences. Pessimism, believing that we have done bad things for bad things to happen, leads to depression and powerlessness. Optimism, accepting that bad things happen to good people but present an opportunity for growth, leads to deep healing. Like one woman in the book states, "This is the role I've been given to play. I'm going to do it as consciously and gracefully as I can."
Personal anecdotes, case histories, and various spiritual readings combine in a powerful tool for healing in FIRE IN THE SOUL. I began working my way through the book several months ago as I underwent a terrible spiritual crisis. As the fires of transformation have burned their ways through my life, Borysenko's confirmation of spiritual truths that I have long held has provided the lifeline needed to endure and even flourish despite profound challenges. Certainly it is an imperfect book, with an over abundance of references aimed to encourage the reader to buy Borysenko's previous book. And many of the concepts are quite familiar. Yet Borysenko's gift for weaving text that speaks to the soul and inspires transformation makes FIRE IN THE SOUL a powerful spiritual tool. FIRE IN THE SOUL comes very highly recommended.

This book helped during a very difficult time

I read this book during the recent hospitalization and subsequent passing of my wife. In the course of dealing with death and dying, I experienced what I would call a spiritual awakening. This book helped provide a context for some of what I was experiencing and was actually a source of incredible comfort. I'm in the process of re-reading this book now & again find it helpful and affirming for the spiritual path I now find myself to be on.
