This book tells you how to use techniques and tactics through conversation to help you become a more smooth and likable person.It will also help you to defend yourself when you are being put down on by your peers. This book really delivered and I feel like I can immediately use all of what I read and learned. If I can't use them, I know what to look for and avoid when arguing and defending myself from others.

William Caplin is James McGill Professor of Music Theory at the Schulich School of Music, McGill University, specializing in the theory of musical form and the history of harmonic and rhythmic theory in the modern era. A former president of the Society for Music Theory, he is currently a Killam Research Fellow writing a large-scale study on musical cadence.

The best musical analysis textbook

This is, quite simply, the best musical analysis textbook I've seen. The theories are presented comprehensively and clearly, and are illustrated through numerous examples. The narrow focus on the instrumental music of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven means that the theories can be based firmly on describing characteristic elements of this specific body of work, rather than presenting a prescriptive essence of what the forms "should" look like.

As a result, this text is extremely practical and useful in understanding the compositions of these three composers. And, because of their tremendous influence on subsequent composers, I have found the theories to be helpful in analyzing western "art" music into the late Romantic period.

The focus on practical, descriptive theories and applying them to numerous musical examples has also paid some unexpected dividends--it turns out that elements of these theories are useful in analyzing music in other idioms, like pop music. For example, it is often easy to find presentation, continuation, and transition functions in Max Martin pop songs, perhaps with a restive "pre-core" at the beginning of the bridge. Parts may be relatively "tight knit" or "loose knit". The sections with transition functions may be based on material from the "main theme" or new material. The "recap" after the bridge may omit or compress material to avoid repetition but still give a sense of "return". There might be a coda that refers back to material not seen since the introduction, to tie up loose ends. And so forth.

I highly recommend this textbook to any serious student of music interested in learning more about western "art" music.

Stop worrying! Mr. Worry will do it for you!

See those wrinkles on Mr. Worry's forehead? Those are all caused by him worrying over everything! If it rains, he worries about his roof leaking but if it doesn't rain he worries that his plants will die. When he goes shopping, Mr. Worry worries that the shops will close before he gets there and if they aren't closed he worries about spending too much money! Get the picture?! The worries go on and on until one day, he meets a kind wizard who tells him to go home and write a list of all his worries. When that is done, the wizard promises to make sure that none of the things of the list will happen so Mr. Worry will never have to worry again.

What a long list Mr. Worry writes but does it help? Yes! Mr. Worry actually smiles for the first time in a long time! BUT we all know worriers, don't we and guess what? Eventually Mr. Worry starts worrying because he has nothing to worry about! AAGH!

If you have a child that likes to worry this would be a great story for them. It's great for all other kids too to ensure that they don't end up like Mr. Worry!

Ne'er-do-well little red fellow learns the joys of silence.

This fantastic novella details the wild adventures and journeys of one Mr. Noisy in his desperate attempts to obtain sustenance from those who would begrudge his powerful vocal cords. Replete with vibrant motifs and a stunning denouement, the reader is swept on a thrilling ride through Wobbletown and is given a rare glimpse into the lives of its inhabitants. Sometimes charming, sometimes disturbing, but always unmistakably human, the residents of Wobbletown present us with a microcosm which could (lo, should) be a paradigm for a society of any scale which strives to build itself upon a foundation of decency. In his relentless quest for the highly symbolic loaf of bread and piece of meat, Mr. Noisy will be forced to face not just the prejudices of Mrs. Crumb and Mr. Bacon, but also the repressed demons of a torturous childhood whose indelible scars will define both Mr. Noisy and his eternal quest for self-betterment. Seemingly doomed from page one by his boisterous hubris, Mr. Noisy will stun and delight the reader with his unlikely triumphs over the most inexorable opponent of all, Nature.

Feed that OCD

Mr. Fussy is horrible, obsessive, and insists on order in a chaotic world. Like most of the Mr. Men characters, Mr. Fussy's inability to be direct about his needs and general passive-aggressive approach to social interaction exacerbates the underlying conflict between himself and his long lost Aussie cousin, Mr. Clumsy, that is only resolved over time. (As opposed to say, an honest conversation).
Mr. Fussy needs a good therapist and probably some aversion therapy.
My kid seems to enjoy the line drawings and colors, but eventually he decided that he enjoyed the Mr. Clumsy book better.

About the Author

I love this tiny book. The 128 pages are like a series of well paced centerfold avant-garde theater and curtains open and close with the flip of each page. The storytelling is punctual, but unlike punch lines, they are surprisingly eloquent and provocative. Texts and images compliment each other in a 1+1>2 way, leaving a complex aftertaste that begs to be re-savored. I also want to compliment on the built quality of this physical object that fits in my palm, the weight, binding and coloring are simply top notch.

Tiny in size but the creativity contained within this small volume never ceases to amaze me.

I’ve had the luxury of reading and reviewing both volumes one and two so when I had the opportunity to review this new volume, how could I refuse?

Once again, hitRECord, founded by Joseph Gordon-Levitt has put together another collection of amazing stories which happen to be only one or two pages long. The beauty of this project is that anyone can join the community and submit their work for a chance to be included in the next volume.

This is a fun book and would make a nice gift. I have all three and they do look great on my shelf. Most are simple black and white line drawings but there are shots of color here and there. I really enjoy them and love that artists everywhere, have the opportunity to be published through this project.

The collaborative concept behind hitrecord is brilliant on its own, and the fact that you can have a physical example of the connected work is great! The cover is really sweet and has a nice touch to it, as well as the tiny size. Lovely!

How did it turn from a luxury into a staple in just a few years? In this enlightening book, Alissa Hamilton explores the hidden history of orange juice. She looks at the early forces that propelled orange juice to prominence, including a surplus of oranges that plagued Florida during most of the twentieth century and the army’s need to provide vitamin C to troops overseas during World War II. She tells the stories of the FDA’s decision in the early 1960s to standardize orange juice, and the juice equivalent of the cola wars that followed between Coca-Cola (which owns Minute Maid) and Pepsi (which owns Tropicana). Of particular interest to OJ drinkers will be the revelation that most orange juice comes from Brazil, not Florida, and that even “not from concentrate” orange juice is heated, stripped of flavor, stored for up to a year, and then reflavored before it is packaged and sold. The book concludes with a thought-provoking discussion of why consumers have the right to know how their food is produced.

Orange Juice: Fascinating, But Not so Wholesome

Orange juice is healthy and wholesome. We drink it because it's fresh, full of Vitamin C and made from the natural fruit of orange trees. Right? Not hardly, says Alissa Hamilton in this darkly absorbing history of the Florida orange juice industry. Even if the carton says "not from concentrate," what you drink when you pour a glass of conventional, pre-squeezed orange juice is wholly industrialized, more a product of laboratory "food science" than of those sunshine-nourished orange groves Bing Crosby and Anita Bryant once pitched.

Hamilton set out to chronicle the orange juice industry's influence on the biodiversity of the sweet orange. When she and Dixi, her Jack Russell terrier-Chihuahua mix, drove to Lakeland, Florida, for four months at Florida Southern College, she hit the historian's mother-lode in the Thomas B. Mack Citrus Archives, presided over by Professor Mack himself, a nonagenarian who had studied the citrus industry for more than half a century "collecting weird and wonderful memorabilia along the way."

Documents Hamilton stumbled across in her "unmethodical" search of the archives--"the only type possible in the disarray," she comments in a wry aside--changed the direction of her research and painted a damming picture of the "wholesome" citrus industry and its "tree-fresh" product. Her discoveries--and the loss of the archives after Professor Mack died--have all the ingredients of a gripping detective story. Unfortunately, this thoroughly researched book is uneven, with long stretches that read more like a dissertation than a popular book.

It's not that Hamilton isn't a good writer. But in her enthusiasm to document the metamorphosis of the Florida orange juice industry from a fresh product to a laboratory evocation, and from individual growers hand-tending orchards of decades-old trees to industrial-scale orchards of trees "depleted" and replaced like worn-out dairy cows, the story bogs down. (The acronyms don't help: I kept stumbling over FCOJ for "frozen concentrated orange juice" and NFC OJ, "not from concentrate orange juice.")

The story in Squeezed, about an industry that became so successful in deceiving the consumer that it may have killed its own market, is an important contribution to the annals of our everyday food and how it is produced and marketed.

"I wrote this book with a modest ambition," Hamilton says in the Preface, "to make you look at your glass of pre-squeezed orange juice differently and begin to see through the opaque packages of food that surround you." She achieves that ambition and more. Although not an easy read, Squeezed is worth the effort.

Thorough.

This book is a thorough, though sometimes dry (insert your own pun here), account of how orange juice came to be a product marketed as quite pure but in many senses actually anything but.

It makes for an interesting case study of one corner of our incredibly industrialized food system. The author seems quite fascinated by the regulatory hearings which led especially to the current state of affairs with respect to "not-for-concentrated" orange juice; the reader feels distinctly less fascinated than the author.

One thing of interest is precisely the lack of conclusions drawn. Yes, we conclude, orange juice is quite unlike the orange in the advertisements with the straw sticking straight out of it. And, yes, the way it came to be what it is today came from complex chemical, industrial, and legal processes. But there's also not any particular reason to think that these processes are dangerous or unhealthful -- just dishonest. So what, if anything, is to be done? The author deliberately refuses to answer.

Informative but repetitive

I love OJ, but never really thought about how it was made. Armed with the information in this book, I am going to be a better consumer. The one fault with this book is it is quite repetitive. Information from the 1961 Standards of Identity hearings is repeated, sometimes several times.
