As far as manuals go this Longman Writer's Companion is a great book to have. I was thinking about selling it back, but I like it so much I plan on keeping it. It is very useful and easy to use in class.

Missing Pages, but Good

The book was in good condition despite missing index pages. A great price can't be mad when the bookstore charges you $90 for a brand new copy and they sell it for $6 on Amazon.

About the Author
Jacqueline grew up in the rural southeast and is the youngest child of a large and rowdy family. Reading was an escape when there wasn't much else around to do. She loves everything from classical literature to true crime and everything in between. With her two children grown and gone, she's surrounded by a menagerie of adopted pets and a two-legged thief who refused to give her heart back after a night of karaoke. With a day job and a dream job, her writing is a steamy combination of real life and seeking to answer the age-old question of what would happen if...and then characters come along and completely derail the plan. Letting them have their say provides plenty of sleepless nights and an endless combination of coffee and wine, but she hopes you enjoy their stories.

Renegade , love it !

William and Margaret have a beautiful story that will have you glued to your seat in anticipation of what happens next.

William is known as the wild child of their small community, known for his renegade ways. Rich boy, whose family has a reputation for the way they cam into their money. He has a reputation as a lady's man, never holding on to one longer than he wears a pair of socks before moving on to the next. That is, until Margaret literally walks into his path.

Margaret is a good girl, always wanting her parents approval at all cost. Her father's approval and mother's smile mean the world to this young girl, whose put off college to help the household run while her mother is fighting for her life. Never walked on the wrong side of the path her belief's have been set for her until William literally runs into her.

This is a beautiful story of a couple whose lives change by meeting each other. Together they learn about love, loyalty and true friendships. They have to fight for their love through many ups and downs. War, fighting for life, and helping friends out of situations to help them discover their own love.

Their is a beautiful HEA at the end of the story, only thing is Jacqueline...please say your going to tell us about Vince and Tammy, that is an ending I didn't get in this story that I would love to read. 5 star review for this new and very talented author. I am excited to see where this journey of the Steele family will be taking us.

“Her soft hands hugged my face, tilting me up to her. It was too dark to see any emotion in her eyes, and when I hesitated, Margaret took the reins, leaning her body into mine, kissing me.”

5 emotionally beautiful stars!! This book will make you feel every emotion imaginable. It’s beautifully written and so well thought out!

It’s the summer of 1969 and poor Margaret is watching her mother died, while being sheltered in a religious house and constantly told she can’t have any fun. William lives a privileged life, comes from a rich family and he’s known for being the bad boy. Always pushing his limits and seeing how far he can take them. When these two meet up, Margaret’s sheltered life is blown through the roof. But when she’s forced to choose the man she loves or the rest of her life….what will she do?

This book will definitely make you feel things!! It’s emotional and gripping and so well told! We’ve all had that relationship where we were forced to choose, so I know how Margaret feels. I can’t even begin to describe how well written this book is and how beautiful the love story is.

Sweet Romance

Renegade is a Pre-Quel to a new series of books but believe me this book lacks for nothing. It is superbly written, well thought out, and flows smoothly. I read it in one sitting because I couldn't walk away from it. Renegade is set in the late 60's which was a simpler time with a lot of chaos in the world. Margaret Wilson has lived a sheltered life with a strict upbringing. She had plans to attend college which were sidetracked by an ailing parent, lack of funds, and a feeling of responsibility to her family.
William Steele has lived a privileged life and is known as the town bad-boy. His family is rich with a bit of a shady background that the town won't let them forget.
When Margaret and William's lives collide it is sparked with electricity. Margaret stretches her boundaries to be with the man she loves and William has to rethink the way he lives his life. I would suggest this book for anyone who loves a real romance of the hearts. Great read for me. Can't wait for my next read of the Steele family, I am hooked. Great job Jacqueline Sinclair. I was given an arc for a honest review.

A contextual account is adopted for the satisfaction of curiosity. It then discusses the conditions of successful reference to the object of curiosity and its presuppositions. The book concludes with a discussion on the limits of curiosity and its satisfaction.

Considering this neglect, Philosophy of Curiosity is without precedent in addressing the subject in a comprehensive manner. Before Littleton, Colorado, there was Pearl, Mississippi--this is the high school murder rampage that started it all.
This book is amazing. It's hard to believe kids can even think like this. It's hard to believe parents don't see this. It's hard to believe that it could have be any one of us or any one of our kids. A shocking wake-up call.

SHOCKING, SAD, AND EYE-OPENING

This book is insightful in all aspects: Luke's relationships between his mother, Christy, classmates and friends. It also shows how pushed and fed-up he had felt by those around him, and how he snapped. The passages of everyone's deaths (students, his mother, the dog) were absolutely sickening and heartbreaking. The photos in the book (as in many of these books) are disturbing, and they promote book sales as well as show people up close the heinousness that human beings are truly capable of. That can be very hard for those who knew someone involved in the case.

The book makes you feel deep sympathy for all of the victims. It can even make you feel some understanding about Luke Woodham. What he did was horrible. But his behavior also helped to shed some light on a real problem that's growing in America: Teenagers who snap because they lack that crocodile skin necessary to survive being ridiculed by goofy jocks. They also snap when they cannot handle feeling ignored, misunderstood, unwanted by loved ones. Luke Woodham was WRONG to do what he did, but he also must have had real untreated mental problems that made him resort to murder.

There are many, many more young people like him out there who can relate to him, and they need to be helped before they do something terrible. America connot continue to place all of the blame on the video games, music and movies. These things do not create bad feelings or thoughts! They may sometimes fuel them, (which IS bad) but they're not the root of where it's coming from! I'd love to see more teenagers turn out to be okay.

Luke Woodham seemed to be a ticking time bomb, resulting from feeling unwanted, ridiculed, combined with whatever chemical imbalance his mind may have had. Some people snap where others handle problems better and move on. I felt this book showed it.

I would suggest this book to anyone interested in why teens kill. But a lot of it is disturbing, and keep in mind that the media does NOT get all the facts!

Luke Woodham was one of many students who were involved in school shooting sprees of the late 1990s. October 1, 1997 is day etched in infamy in the Pearl Mississippi community and Pearl High School where Luke shot several people, killing two students; one teacher and seriously injuring several more people. Prior to his school rampage, Luke's mother was stabbed and bludgeoned to death by her own son.

Born on February 5, 1981 some 8 years after his brother John II, Luke grew up feeling like a misfit and an outsider. Ostracized by his peers; taunted by his brother and made a whipping boy by their mother who was alternately overly punitive with Luke, such as making him eat food he had thrown away and obsessively loving with him, even insisting on following him on his dates. It appears that from the accounts given, Mary Ann Woodham did not have a healthy relationship or view of her son.

Prior to the killings, Luke's notebooks and even some English assignments were rife with stories containing cruelty and themes of violence. In one especially atrocious case, Luke savagely killed his beloved dog Sparkle. The irony of this atrocity is that Sparkle was the one creature who loved Luke unconditionally. One's heart naturally goes out to that gentle little creature, Sparkle. What Luke did to her literally made me ill.

Luke was involved in violent role-playing games with several other boys. They were charged with conspiracy and received sentences in varying degrees of severity, ranging from several years to several months based on age and degree of involvement.

This is a well-written book that provides insights into a tortured person's dark psyche. Luke was clearly a very sick and violent person and from all descriptions, his relationships followed a pattern of abnormality. Christy Menafee, the girl he dated and later killed was one of the few friends Luke had. He called her his girlfriend, although from all accounts it is doubtful she returned his level of ardor. He made her the object of his love-hate fantasies. Luke even admitted that he snapped because, in his words, "life had wronged" him and he felt he had to strike back.

Each death and the description of same are heartbreaking, tragic and very upsetting. Luke Woodham was and will continue to remain a tragic figure, a person who was so trapped in the mire of bad family relationships; poor interpersonal skills and a lifetime of peer ridicule, rejection and ostracism. Not that any of this excuses Luke or makes his actions any less atrocious; rather, this book sheds light on what drove Luke to dark forces and to the decisions he ultimately made.

The one death that stood out from the others was the death of his beloved dog Sparkle. Since the dog was a loving pet who had done nothing but love and accept Luke, her death was especially heinous and upsetting. This book makes one's heart go out to everybody who was shot and to those who loved and cared about them. One cannot help but wonder had Luke gotten therapeutic intervention earlier in his life and had the issue of bullying been brought to the forefront sooner, these tragedies might have been prevented.

The late 1990s knew a rash of school shootings, the most infamous being Columbine on April 20, 1999. One point that I think this biography is making is that many kids are socially isolated loners like Luke, who are ill-treated by peers and have poor social skills and bad family relationships, but they don't kill others. Video games are not the cause of these bad decisions with deadly consequences. This is not to say they don't fire the imaginations of the more disturbed, such as Luke Woodham and his "Kroth" friends, but these games are not the cause of such deadly actions. Luke was clearly an aberrant personality and years of abuse no doubt caused him to snap, but again, this is not an excuse, but a way of exploring what caused his aberrance and what could have prevented the atrocities that took place on October 1, 1997.

Through encounters with sundry artists, musicians, students, bar owners, gangsters, prostitutes, and slackers, Mexico assembles a compelling portrait of China�s contemporary youth culture and the limits of Communist control. The book�s subjects include a twenty-seven-year-old self-taught disaster photographer from the coal country in Shenyang; a twenty-nine-year-old mobster in Qingdao; a twenty-two-year-old Hendrixian Uighur guitar player making a splash in Shanghai; a Beijing university student who wishes that the system encouraged less rote memorization and more original thought; and an investigative journalist who no longer publishes himself, instead leading Western reporters to controversial stories. Mexico, a musician and poet who was a student in Beijing and subsequently managed a night club, has assumed a pseudonym to avoid trouble with the Chinese authorities. While occasionally anxious about his youth and his lack of credentials, he is a good listener and knows how to tell a provocative and illuminating story.

Zachary Mexico started studying Chinese at age fifteen, and traveled to China for the first time at age sixteen. He has studied at Columbia University in New York and Qinghua University in Beijing. This is not the Communist China we grew up with!

Having recently read and reviewed Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven, in which two women travel to Communist China in the '80s, I was fascinated to read Zachary Mexico's riveting portraits of "underground" artists, musicians, and intellectuals in the newer, more open China of the 21st century. I actually had Zachary Mexico's father as a guest Pilates client for several days here at Parrot Cay. I always ask guests about the books they are reading while on holiday, and he actually gave me his copy of the book just before he left so that I could read it for review.

Having lived in Kunming, China from 2002-2004, Mexico found that he really missed China. As he says, "it is hard to imagine a more exciting place than China." With a growing economy and more personal creative freedom, people at every level of Chinese society are changing and growing in ways nobody would have imagined 10 or 20 years ago. So he decided to return and write "about the crazy people I'd met in China and the even crazier people they'd introduced me to."

China Underground takes us from the mountains of Dali, where green marijuana grows freely and is smoked freely by just about everybody, to Linfen, the most polluted city in the world, where everyone wears masks to filter the obvious particles out of the air. He visits with prostitutes (known as chickens), with minority Uighur musicians, with filmmakers, writers, homosexuals (rabbits), and academics.

I must admit that I was at first shocked by the amount of drug use among the younger Chinese. Pot, black hashish, ketamine, cocaine... many are stoned all day every day. And they are disillusioned after growing up in a Communist system that actively discourages individual creative thought and any kind of critical argument.

The overall feeling of the book is hard to pin down, as even the same people express desperation, glee, excitement, despair, boredom, and impatience all in the space of a few hours or days. People want change, but aren't necessarily prepared for what change might mean.

Mexico offers a peek into the inside inner workings of daily life in China that most of us will never get to see. You will be surprised, shocked, and horrified. You will laugh, cry, and get angry. But most of all China Underground will make you think about China differently. This is not the Communist China we grew up with!

Refreshing Look at China

Zachary Mexico has written a series of 16 character studies of people that we rarely hear about in newspapers, magazines or books. These are not the uber entrepreneurs or super-students, but are all an intriguing lot. Mexico in his introduction says that he wrote this book because it was the one he wanted to read, but no one had written. Mexico demonstrates himself to be a gifted story teller who engages the reader.

His subjects range widely from a Uighur rock guitarist to a role playing gamers to Nigerian drug dealers. Mexico dives beneath the tourist and business worlds and shows a China that is fascinating. Some stories, such as the journalist who broke the blood bank HIV crisis, do not give us hope as he laments the dearth of investigative journalism. Others, like the chapter on the thriving punk rock scene in Wuhan, show us a lively culture that is thriving.

This is a fantastic read, and will introduce you to a China that does not get enough exposure.
