This book was everything it was described as and more. I am a paid subscriber to Mariusz' excellent stock reports, Classic Value Investors, and this book clearly includes many of the resources he uses for discovering and analyzing value stocks. I have already starting using several of the previously unknown internet resources and sites that he recommends. Mariusz sets the bar high for clarity and insight in all his work and this book is a reflection of his expertise and attention to detail. This book is a time saver for expanding one's horizons in learning about public companies. I am very satisfied and a bit overwhelmed with all this book has to offer.

She is the co-editor of From Mouse to Mermaid: The Politics of Film, Gender, and Culture (Indiana 1995).

Needs clarity and an editor

This book is bizarrely unclear and poorly written. She has a tendency to take simple ideas and complicate them using odd metaphors that don't make sense. It reads like a first draft of a freshman's essay where she doesn't quite know what she's trying to say. Occasionally she seems to misunderstand established terms in the field of communication, like God and Devil terms.
People usually assume that communication is a throwaway major, that it's a simple and easy way to get a degree. It's not organic chemistry, but it definitely requires a text that puts a little more thought into expressing complicated ideas.
There are good things about it, but they're limited to what she has a clear comprehension of. She knows mimesis, poiesis, etc, but go into more complex ideas and she lets you down.
She bolds important definitions and words, but for the most part the book is disorganized and not as clear as it should be.

The principal objective of the Handbook, like that of similar volumes in the fields of engineering and physical sciences, is to serve the student, the teacher, and the expert who seeks information outside his own area of specialization. Another aim has been to produce as comprehensive a work as possible and, at the same time,keep it from becoming unwieldy in size and prohibitive in cost. To achieve this goal it has been necessary to condense some 20,000 sheets of data into the present number of tables, and, further, to condense each table to the point where only the most generally useful, informative, and comprehensive material would be included. Also, by the very nature of the subject material, certain of the tables will appear elementary to the expert in the field, while to the student - a beginner in the subject of the table - or to an expert in another field, the same data may seem extremely complex. For the compiler, who cannot posses an expert knowledge of all fields in the bio-sciences, the task of choosing for publication not only the subject areas, but also data within these areas, would have been utterly impossible without the unprecedented cooperation of some 17,000 biological scientists who gave freely of their time to serve as advisers, appraisers, contributors, and reviewers.

About the Author
Robert B. Marks (Kingston, Canada) is a professional writer and editor and EverQuest enthusiast. Although a Medievalist by education, Marks has been involved with computer games for his entire adult life (and most of his childhood). His first professional publication was a review of Myth II: Soulblighter for Computer Gaming World. Since then, Marks inaugurated the Blizzard fiction line for Pocket Books with a best-selling ebook titled Diablo: Demonsbane, has written close to 200 professionally published articles covering the Web Hosting industry, and has written an ongoing bi-weekly column titled Garwulf's Corner, which deals with computer game issues and has a readership in the tens of thousands spread across the world.

Good Overview but Serious Gaps

Overall, this is not a bad book and in fact, Bob Marks deserves credit for providing so many illustrative applications. However, this is more pop astrology than a serious examination of Solar Return astrology. For instance, Bob doesn't really address the fact his method of "adjusting" solar returns is actually a subject of debate among astrologers (some find the method he applies, precession-corrected placements, to be intellectually incoherent). Another and more problematic gap is the fact the solar return is actually two return charts: when the sun returns to the native's natal position every year -and- the natal house that is returned in the solar return chart. That is to say, the degree that is rising. Both are critical in understanding the areas of life that the native should focus on/will focus on/will be brought to his attention. For instance, if someone wants to focus on enhancing friendships, that person can either place the sun (and hopefully some benefic heavenly bodies) into the solar return 11th house -or- return his natal 11th house to the ascendant of the solar return chart. The question "is it better to return a specific house to the solar return ascendant or to place the sun in the desired house of the solar return chart?" is a separate discussion.

The other element of this book that smacks of pop astrology is his all-too-brief interpretations of what each planet "means" in the solar return chart without regard to how the solar return planets aspect each other or how they aspect the native's natal placements. Simply, many of these interpretations are premised on a few anecdotes he relates. While it is true he's been practicing for several decades, and likely cultivated the most salient of examples, the overall content seems too reduced - precisely to appeal to as broad as audience as possible.

On balance then, this is a good book if you want to dip your toes into an accessible branch of horary astrology - but by no means is it a comprehensive resource to help the reader construct an optimal solar return chart.

Not a "Do it Yourself" book

I was intrigued by the title of this book. I had planned to travel this year on my birthday so I purchased the book assuming it would help me select a destination. Wrong! Unless you are a professional astrologer or purchase the software ($350) to run your solar return chart, this book won't help you with selecting a destination. I have a copy of my solar return chart from last year and tried to use the instructions in this book to determine where I should have spent my last birthday. Much too complicated for a beginner! If what you want is to know where to travel to on you next birthday, use the money you'll save by not buying this book to pay a good astrologer to give you the answer.

Only for those with plenty of time and money.

Im glad they sent me the book on time, and in good condition. However this book advised us to travel to certain areas of the world where the houses in our chart will be postively affected.
This is nice if you are a rich retiree who has plenty of money and time to travel. Not to mention, what if you have to go to a hell hole like Rawanda for your houses to be affected positively? The author also assumed that the reader has a vast knowlege of astrology, not considering the beginners out there. Ive studied astrology for 3 years, and still barely understood the "lingo"and the rest.

Unique and surprising - 4.5

Well, if there's one thing to be said about "Nana", it's that the book will sure keep you on your toes. With a large and shifting cast of characters (all of whom seem to revolve around, of course, Nana), Zola wrote the first of his novels that I did not immediately love, but a remarkable, disturbing and bizarre book.

For those coming from "L'Assommoir", it's easy to remember Nana as the girl who starts out adorable and quickly disappears from her parents' lives. For those who haven't read "L'Assommoir" yet, do so now. It's a great book. As for "Nana", it continues with Zola's incredibly detailed style. This writing, which suited me fine in "L'Assommoir" and in "Germinal" (excellent) suddenly seems to drag a little. "Nana" is wickedly brilliant in all the dialogues and the relationships between people. In between, however, the story slows down, at times almost bogging down.

"Nana" presents the highly hypocritical and strange world of the wealthy Parisians at the time of the World Fair. Full of whoring and sex (all of which is, of course, never explicitly described, leaving this book technically "clean", if you don't mind hearing about cross-dressing orgies), "Nana" seems to mock the culture that at once harbors such behavior and simultaneously criticizes it. The reader almost feels sympathy for a struggling Nana, as she wreaks havoc around her. There lies the great genius of Zola's writing - even as the book stumbles, it manages to keep the reader hooked to Nana's story and wondering what strange scene will come next.

"Nana" is a clever, interesting book. Offering a view of Parisian theatrics and "wealthy" life, it also presents hypocrisy, debauchery and female strength - Nana repeatedly proves to the men around her that she does not need them, that she can rely and survive by herself. It's an important addition to the Rougon-Macquart cycle, telling one more French tale. It's a special, fascinating, enrapturing book. Still, it does not manage to cast the same spell as "Germinal" and "L'Assommoir". While I recommend this wholeheartedly, I suggest readers start with those two great books first. Regardless, "Nana" is a unique and surprising book about whoring in Paris - 4.5.

gender-reversal during the decline of the Second Empire

In this novel, one of Zola's five or six "great books" about life during the Second Empire of France, we see a great number of men fall under the destructive influence of Nana, a demimonde who rose to fame from the backstreets of Paris. Nana is a prostitute, performer, socialite and celebrity all in one, making for a massive force of destruction. While every bit as earthy (and then some) as "L'Assommoir," this story is not quite as grim; depending on your sense of humor, it is also funnier.

For 1880, the descriptions of Nana's numerous trysts, games and affairs are, um, rather progressive, but this is a result of Zola's "naturalist" style. He collected copious notes on real figures at the time, and stood by the accuracy of his details. Nana did actually exist as a demimonde (or maybe a few), hastening the decadence of Napoleon III's France.

The back cover misleadingly advertises this story is a "poem of male desires," when it is Nana's desires and ambitions which drive the plot and dominate the imagery. Like no other book that I've read, "Nana" reverses the gender roles of its characters; with a fair amount of cross-dressing, homosexuality, physical abuse and assorted perversions. There are some dramatic scenes of degradation of Nana's men which are either 1.) some measure of revenge on men (Nana's mother experienced a lot of abuse in "L'Assommoir"), 2.) revenge on the wealthy, or 3.) expressions of boredom. Fans of "Fear Factor" might appreciate.

Zola's themes have a lot of parallels today: decadence, fear of aging, and destructive affairs (look at what a divorce proceeding did to General Electric's share price). I had no problem with the translation by Mr. Holden, and the story is certainly not boring. "Nana" is probably not for anyone, certainly not for younger readers, but it deserves its reputation as a great book.
