Good content and format - 5 star costumer service

I am into this book a few chapters, so far the material is good and helpful transitioning to 2012. I can not comment on the full content yet but the author is easily readable and the examples understandable. I also like the format, because as a large paperback it stays open on the page you are on while laying on its back.

That said the screen shots are usually often so faded that it sometimes takes a magnifying glass for my eyes to be able to read them. Apparently the contrast setting was off when the pictures were matched to the text.

I like seeing screenshots in tech books since besides illustrating, they often save me from reading the preceding text.

With that quality, not worth the price charged. My company bought two of these and both are the same.

Update 10/15/13:

After leaving a comment about the quality on the publisher's web site, I was quickly contacted and shipped replacement books immediately. The ones we received were apparently part of a bad batch.

Outstanding customer service, I am very happy with the replacement.

TAEKO KAMIYA received a BA for Doshisha Women's College (Kyoto) and MAs from the University of San Francisco in education and from the Monterey Institute of International Studies in linguistics. She taught Japanese for twenty-five years at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California. Among her publications are Speak Japanese Today (1989), Japanese for Fun: Make Your Stay in Japan More Enjoyable (1990), Tuttle New Dictionary on Loanwords in Japanese (1994), Subject-Grouped 1016 Kanji in Context (1997), and Japanese Particle Workbook (1998).

In order to master a foreign language, it is crucial for students to acquire a solid knowledge of its verbs and their usage. Japanese is no exception.

Japanese verbs are often said to be difficult and complicated and hard to learn. That is not true. In fact, they are simple and less complicated to learn than those of many other languages. Unlike some European languages, you do not have to memorize different forms to indicate the number or person or gender of the subject of the sentence. The verb kaku, for instance, could mean I/we write, you (sing./ pl.) write, he/she/it writes or they write. Moreover, Japanese verbs are highly regular in the way they make their forms. Once you grasp certain rules for making such forms as the negative, conjunctive, conditional forms, etc., you will be able to apply these rules to almost any verbs.

The purpose of this book is to describe in detail not only how Japanese verbs conjugate, but how you should use the verb forms in connection with sentence structures.

The book is divided into two parts. Part I deals with the conjugations of the three types of verbs--regular I, regular II and irregular verbs, as well as copulas (be-verbs) and auxiliaries. A conjugation practice follows the description of a verb or a group of verbs. Part II deals with the usage of various verb forms. Each usage is illustrated with example sentences, and exercises are provided every few lessons to allow you to test your understanding.

So many great grammar books from Kodansha and Kamiya!

Great book! I wish there was a kindle version too! I would totally buy it! One with OCR so I can search the books for words while I am practicing grammar in daily life. Until then, I'm going to buy my own scanner so I can scan all of my grammar books for various languages and have them all with me and searchable when I am out in the field practicing these languages.

Excellent reference book

I've been studying Japanese for 4 years now and this is probably the most helpful book on Japanese grammar I've ever bought! While there are practice sections for each grammar pattern, I would not recommend this book for someone who is just beginning Japanese. However, as a supplement for students who have already been studying the language and want to take their writing and reading to the next level, this product is a must have.

The sentence pattern index in the back is just amazingly helpful. You can look things up by either the Japanese conjugation or the English equivalent - both things that are necessary for a book to really be helpful for reading and writing, as I can easily look something up. It is also really nice to be able to just look up a conjugation, especially "Te-form" and be able to see ALL of the grammar patterns that go with it.

I had a couple of years classroom study in Japanese, many years ago, and have been learning on my own for the last year. This book, and Kamiya's other manual on pattern sentences, have been useful especially as integrative works that bring together lots of scattered information approached differently in textbooks. I think it would be less successful as a first-learning tool, but I'm not in a position to judge. The verb handbook is a very nice reference and summary of verb groups and conjugations, and clarifies the systems by which the various forms are derived. Short exercises with answers let you know whether you've really "got it".

Finally! Relief from constant anxiety and more......

Dennis and Dr. Jen teach simple truths that are amazingly effective, once put into action. The best part is that it's all explained in a manner which even a child can listen to, then know what to do in order to put the concepts into practice!
I began working on my issues as a 10yr old, from counselors and shrinks, to MDs (for meds to try to control anxiety and depression, to many types of healing ministries, deliverance ministry, digging into the Bible, and facing / dealing with my "stuff", but had never found anything that worked - beyond the temporary. I had always tried to connect with God, and wondered why after all these years, I still had so many of the old issues in my heart, and after so much seeking God, I still felt like He was a million miles away. Everything in this book is truth that I've applied daily for the past 3wks, and not only have I seen a reduction in stress and anxiety, but I actually am able to connect with God and feel His Presence in me! Sometimes when praying through issues, as outlined in the book, I laugh out loud because this is the key I've been searching for my entire life, and it's allowing Jesus to free me.....finally!!

The revelation contained in this book is indeed a treasure. I have been a Christian for many, many years, was in ministry, knew the scriptures and yet with all the knowledge I had I found I was still struggling with emotional issues and patterns in my life I could not break. The information in this book is not a method it's the normal Christian life but it has significant how to's to demystify a walk in the spirit.

Life Changing!

I never thought that I could actually be free from shame, guilt and fear and experience true lasting peace. After practicing the principles taught by the Clarks I am enjoying my relationship with Jesus without shame and fear. One of the things I love about this book is the simplicity. I was able to get rid of so many things that robbed me of joy in my relationship with God. It is such a relief to be free from the things I thought I would be stuck with. I practice the things taught in this book almost every day and it has changed my life. AMAZING, AMAZING, AMAZING! Words cannot express how grateful I am to the Clarks for sharing these treasures with me!

R. P. Burn is an amazing writer for mathematical textbooks.
This book follows Burn's typical format; therefore, this text is little more than a collection of (very) brief introductions to terminology and concepts, followed by a long list of questions for each chapter. Finally, each chapter has an answer section.
The questions asked typically very short, and at first are very simple and intuitively obvious. As each chapter progresses, however, the questions begin to build from prior questions already answered and express more and more complex concepts.
Typically, by the time a chapter has been completed, the reader will have completed one or more complicated proofs typically found in other texts on the same subject-- small bite by small bite at a time.
