NOTE TO PRENTICE HALL, THE PUBLISHER (since I could not find a comment area on their website):

I stand by my original comment below. In fact it works just fine on Windows 8.1 But it may not work on the next operating system. IT WOULD BE VERY NICE IF SOMEONE UPDATED THIS SOFTWARE (as well as PredLogic). I will be using PropLogic for a few more years and if it does not work in the next version of Windows, I may postpone purchasing the new version of Windows.

And if the software is updated, this excellent book will continue to SELL.

The software works perfect in Windows 7 64bit. For as old as the software is, I can tell that it was really well written. I am impressed with this book because of how the author follows and takes off from E.J. Lemmon's book Beginning Logic. Using the Prop Logic program to work Lemmon's examples and exercises is a great learning experience. There is some translation of the rules of inference involved, but it is not terribly difficult.

There are better out there.

I dislike to come down on a book written about a subject that I like so much, but I think the author lacked a clear communication ability. Although I am doing a Masters in Software engineering, I felt like I had to struggle a little too much and make too many exceptions for the author in a book labeled "Introduction .." By exceptions, I mean to say that because of my familiarity with the subject, I know where he is trying to go, but felt like for an introduction it should have been written in a more readable style and better organized in the flow of content. I gave it two stars because it has the content necessary and can be learned by those who don't mind struggling their way through it. Also I thought that it was good that it had exercises and puzzles. Comparatively, I found Introduction to Logic by Harry Gensler to make the material more accessible in his writing style.

Nice book.

very nice book. I am not a lawyer nor a law student prospect, but I did take a logic courses in high school, and college. Anyway my friend was studying for the LSAT and was having issues with it. I was reading some of their questions and notice that I was able to solve many of the problems from just applying principles I had learned from this book. While I have no intention of going to law school, this may be a good book to review as a prelaw student prior to taking the test, and prior to going over material related to the test.

BOOM!

This book offers great insight into a culture that still remains largely a homegrown experience. Try as we might, there just is no way anyone can ever fully recreate the sheer explosiveness and creativity that emerged from one tiny likkle island in the Caribbean so many years ago; but it sure is fun to keep a dance yard-style. Sure the dancehall 'style' has been adopted on many a foreign soil, and spawned a multi-million dollar industry (Hip-Hop anyone?), but ah no anyone can do it like they do ina Jamdown. Nor can one ever hope to see such photos unless they're from Yard, or know someone who lived in JA during the 80's. This book is just large. If you consider yourself a dancehall fan you would do well to get your hands on a copy of this book, fi real. You'll learn a lot.

Without a doubt one of the most important books published about the history of post independent Jamaican music. Great for the coffee table or the verandah! A copy of this book would be a great educational reference for young Jamaicans especially who have no clue as to that pivotal era in music.

The photos capture a wonderful period in Jamaican music. As for the poses you just going to laugh when you see them.

How many of us have ever seen photos of artists like Nicodemus, Josie Wales, Yami Bolo, Papa San, Peter Metro, Lone Ranger, Coco Tea, Sister Nancy etc in the prime?

Every library in Jamaica should have a copy.

another fantastic book

Susan Tassone has done it again. All her books on devotions for the Holy Souls are great. This is one of her best. It includes a holy hour for the holy souls and chapter after chapter of prayers for them. It is a fantastic resource for prayers for every category of soul in purgatory and everyone to pray to for them - Jesus, Blessed Mother, Saints, litanies, etc. Well worth the money. I ordered a second copy to put in the Adoraton Chapel of my Church. I would recommend this book to everyone who is Catholic. It has caused me to start praying more consistently for the Holy Souls again.
My only complaint would be her 3 novenas in the front of the book. The first has good infomation to read and no suggested prayers, although there are plenty of prayers in the rest of the book to use. The second and third are way too short on info and prayers. She would have been better off just to make it into an information chapter instead of calling them novenas.

This book has a variety of prayers for the souls in purgatory. It is good to take to Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. There is a lot of knowledge and we can't pray enough for the souls.

Dawn Daum is co-editor of Trigger Points: Childhood Abuse Survivors Experiences of Parenting. She spends her work week as a mental health care manager, helping others put and keep pieces of their lives together. Working in the trenches of the mental health system, and being a survivor of childhood abuse with an ACE score of 9, Dawn is passionate about bringing trauma-informed care to the forefront of mental health and medical care. When she isn't working or capturing life on paper, she's taking advantage of life's simple pleasures with her husband and two children in Upstate, NY.

Survivors Speaking for Ourselves as Break-the-Cycle Parents. FINALLY!!!!

This is a necessary book. A wonderful and helpful resource. The book so many of us looked for and craved and ached for. And couldn't find.

As far as I know this is the only book edited, written and published by survivors of childhood abuse who are parents. It is the only anthology geared towards survivor parents as well.

What a relief. What a celebration. What a triumph. Two editors created the very life-changing and maybe life-saving resource they needed. Go Dawn Daum and Joyelle Brandt. Go to the every single contributor who shared such personal emotions and experiences. There's little of what makes survivor parenting challenging that is not here.

This book will help other survivor parents feel less alone. It deals with topics such as:

Fears of bathing or changing diapers.
Worries and terror at being unable to keep our children safe.
Shame for being triggered by parenting or for having symptoms of post-traumatic stress while parenting.

The authors are all candid, daring and Brene Brown vulnerable and brave. .

But this isn't just a book of revelation, confession or memoir. It also has suggested resources, journal prompts and author bios which follow each essay. As a reader, I'm asked to think and journal about the topics I'm reading about. And, I'm allowed to get to know each writer immediately following his or her essay. This is a format and style I've not seen before. It works well and engages me as a reader.

I'm grateful this honest, practical, warm and well-written is available. It will be especially beneficial to new parents and those struggling or feeling isolated or overwhelmed.

Thank goodness there is a resource that's not clinical or condescending. It's refreshing and rare.

It acknowledges the terror, uncertainty and apprehension many of us felt (or feel) while parenting.

What I hope follows is a book with practical parenting suggestions and tips, survivor to survivor, sharing what does work well and the parts of parenting that are joyful, funny and healing. I'm not sure this is a critique of the book though when there are so few survivor-specific parenting resources.

Often, as survivors we must make our own way and even the blissful and effective tools we discover we have had to make up or copy by watching others. I hope this book is the beginning of a ton of books for survivor parents. The books shows how much we crave community and support while engaged in break-the-cycle parenting.

A moving, informative and wonderful book

I work as a psychologist and a researcher. I read a lot. I have to, to keep up-to-date with the latest findings in the field of attachment, trauma, abuse, psychopathology and child development, which are my fields of expertise.
But this book was different.
Reading it was a wonderful experience.
It is highly informative, it gives references to many scientific resources, therapeutic approaches and blogs. It includes fathers' point of view, which is great and rare in scientific literature.
But above all this book is an emotional and moving journey.
Several women and men (now mothers and fathers), sharing their painful memories, their fears, showing the scars in their souls, allowing the reader to see through their most intimate thoughts and feelings!

I felt honoured and gifted by them.

This book stands, in my opinion, as a monument to those men and women who struggle every day to overcome the pain to be able to be good-enough mothers and fathers, to break the cyrcle of abuse, to be able to love their children and feel their affection. None of these stories tell of miraculous healings and happy families. No, they tell about people who chose to live instead of surrending to the pain, who made the choice of carrying some good in the world, even thought the world brought them nothing but bruises.
I know as a researcher, and i (all too well) know as a father, how hard it is to become a parent, to really be able to let this incredible human experience flood our hearts. And i can only imagine how hard could it be for someone who was treated as unlovable and unworthy.
This book made me a better researcher because it gave me dozens of hints to study different aspects of abused parents' emotions.
But most importantly, it made a better father because it helped me reflect on my experience as a parent through the memories of my own childhood.

Every survivor parent would benefit from this book! It inspires, empowers and includes the reader in the common purpose to raise and guide our children despite our own personal fears. "Why do you crave a life of sin?"

For years, Karin Slaughter has been tantalizing us with bits and pieces of Will Trent's history. Followers of Slaughter's popular series know that Will is an agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. He is dyslexic, scarred physically and psychologically from years in an orphanage and on the streets, and barely made it out of his hellish childhood intact. An ill-advised marriage to a fellow orphan, Angie, has brought Will additional misery. Even though he is still Angie's husband, Will has fallen for pediatrician Sara Linton; Sara cares for him, as well, but she wonders if she can truly be close to a man who has so much emotional baggage. Slaughter's audience knows Sara intimately as a beautiful and brilliant physician and medical examiner who played a prominent role in earlier books.

In "Criminal," Slaughter tells her story in alternating chapters, some of which take place in 1974-75. In the opening scene, we meet a group of wretched female drug addicts. They are at the mercy of a brute who sells their bodies on the street and keeps most of the money they earn for himself. Nineteen-year-old Lucy Bennett started her habit when she took speed to lose weight. She graduated to "injectable amphetamine" and everything spiraled downward from there. Now, she feels as if "she'd swallowed a truckload of concrete" and her hair has been falling out in clumps. Her plight is particularly heartrending since she had once been a good student with a bright future. Now, she is just another streetwalker with dead eyes.

Slaughter places us squarely in Atlanta's underbelly: We witness the unspeakable torture and slaying of helpless women as well as the racism, sexism, and corruption that infected the city's police department in the mid-seventies. The changes that would eventually free women and African-Americans from years of subservience were just beginning.

At the heart of the novel is a shadowy and hulking figure who is obsessed with controlling the prostitutes whom he abducts. On his trail are twenty-five year old Amanda Wagner (Will's current boss) and her colleague, the "pushy and opinionated" Evelyn Mitchell. Both pound pavements, interview witnesses, and resolve to help those who have no one willing to fight for them. Their colleagues are mostly chauvinistic males who taunt and threaten them, but Amanda and Evelyn persist in doing their jobs under difficult circumstances.

This is a suspenseful, hard-hitting, and complex police procedural that provides a vivid portrait of a southern city in transition. Although the subject matter is often distasteful and depressing, Slaughter holds our interest by providing fragments of the truth but withholding the ways in which these fragments fit together. It is not until the final pages that the author ties up the story's dangling threads. "Criminal" is sordid, at times heavy-handed, and a bit drawn out, but it also a chilling, powerful, and poignant tale of hatred, revenge, insanity, compassion, and love.

"Sometimes it's criminal what a woman has to do"

The title of my review was taken from the novel CRIMINAL by Karin Slaughter.
A literary tree was planted in her first thriller BLINDSIGHTED with the tangled roots of Sara Linton, small-town pediatrician and her ex husband Jeffrey Tolliver, sherriff of Heartsdale, Georgia.
The twisted branches grew strong with the likes of Jeff's friend Lena Adams and an assortment of diseased characters feeding off the basis of Sara and Jeff's relationship.
From those branches grasping for a place in the heart of darkness bloom Will Trent, Faith Mithcell and Amanda Wagner,all an integral part of the mind of one of the finest mystery writers I have ever read.

Instead of delving into the plot(s) of CRIMINAL without giving any red herrings away or 'spoiler alerts' I wish to give my observations of what drives myself (in my opinion) and her readers to wait with controlled anticipation for her next thriller to be published.

If one is 'not' a Karin Slaughter novice then one knows about her ability to create such flesh and blood characters when something bad or evil happens to them your gut tightens and you are driven to continue reading and hope for a better outcome.
That is truly a rare gift!

IN CRIMINAL Ms. Slaughter weaves two mysteries together thirty five years apart.
1975 is re-imagined with all the sights, smells and everyday functions that only a great writer could accomplish.
From how women detectives were treated to how they interacted with each other.

Lastly, one of the most sastisfying endings of any thriller I have read in the past year!!!
