A sweeping survey of Xinjiang

"Xinjiang: China's Muslim borderland." brings together 15 of the world's experts on Xinjiang, and the Muslim ethnic minorities that live there, and provides for a broad survey of a region of China's north-west that has been, for centuries, at the very crossroads of civilisations.

Contributors such as Dru Gladney, James Millward and Gardner Bovington, all renowned experts, introduce us to this magical, historical and extremely important area of China. An area that for reasons of economics and strategic importance, not to mention it's sheer size, comprising 1/6th of China's landmass, provides many challenges and opportunities for China, none more important than the challenges posed by, and for, the near majority Muslim population.

This book, written by academics, is easily accessible for the non academic and is a perfect overall introduction to Xinjiang and in particular the Uyghur Muslim people. It covers history, economics the environment, military considerations and important social issues, the latter the main reason for Xinjiang coming to the world's attention in the late 1980's

This book, first published in 2004 and unfortunately yet to be revised, was borne out of the world's need to understand Xinjiang especially as it concerns the Uyghur people and China's policy towards them. A policy that has resulted in many mass clashes leading to severe oppression, imprisonments, religious persecution, executions and death in "strike hard" programmes and Han in-migration as China attempts to Sinocise the region.

The book, being seven years old, obviously is dated in terms of statistical data provided but, that aside, the issues canvassed are no less relevant today as they were then.

If you read no other book on Xinjiang you will have a more than acceptable level of appreciation of this fantastic region and it's peoples. @ChinaLetter

Eye opening account of the use of Xinjiang as a pawn in the WW2 conflict between the USSR and PRC/Kuomintang. The later split between Mao and the USSR probably has it's roots in this conflict rarely examined in the West.

About the Author
Khushwant Singh is Indias bestknown writer and columnist. He has been foundereditor of Yojana and editor of the Illustrated Weekly of India, the National Herald and the Hindustan Times. He is the author of classics such as Train to Pakistan, I Shall Not Hear the Nightingale and Delhi. His latest novel, The Sunset Club, written when he was 95, was published by Penguin Books in 2010. His nonfiction includes the classic twovolume A History of the Sikhs, a number of translations and works on Sikh religion and culture, Delhi, nature, current affairs and Urdu poetry. His autobiography, Truth, Love and a Little Malice, was published by Penguin Books in 2002.

Khushwant Singh was a member of Parliament from 1980 to 1986. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1974 but returned the decoration in 1984 in protest against the storming of the Golden Temple in Amritsar by the Indian army. In 2007, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan. Among the other awards he has received are the Punjab Ratan, the Sulabh International award for the most honest Indian of the year, and honorary doctorates from several universities.

If you have read Absolute Khushwant: The low-down on Life, Death and Most things In-between (2010), you will not find much new in this book. However, It is a good read for someone who has not read the aforementioned book.

I liked the content of the book. It was a quick read. I really liked the fact that the book was publish when Khushwant Singh were 98 years old. It feels a very genuine and truthful writing about what he truly believed. A non conformist to the hilt and lived life to the full.

Actually it has many little and not so little gems in it.

However I have been an admirer of Kushwant Singh's for many decades!

Was looking for his last book, but this is not it.

Still glad to have it, though.

A good book about Corsair aces

Flying the F4F Wildcat early in the Pacific war, pilots were trying to gain the upper hand against the superior Japanese A6M Zero. But their Wildcats lacked speed, rate of climb and maneuverability. But with the new F4U Corsair, pilots found that the F4U was more than a match for Japanese fighters.
Corsairs evolved from the early 'bird cage' F4U-1As, to the later F4U-1Ds, these planes struck fear in Japanese pilots who dared go against the 'whistling death'.

This book is an early book of Ospreys 'Aircraft of the aces' series.
I found the first hand accounts a little heavy in this book. Now, I like first hand accounts from aces, but this book contains 85% first hand accounts and 15% information from the author. The first hand accounts were only from a few aces, so you only get limited variety of information on the aces. I was also a little disappointed that there was not more information on Gregory 'Pappy' Boyington, who is one of the most famous USMC aces of the Pacific. Thus 4 stars instead of my usual 5.
I like the later Osprey books with balanced information from the author and first hand accounts from aces.
I did find that the pictures, color plates of both planes and pilots were well done.
If you want to read about Corsair aces about WWII, then buy the book, but you'll have more first hand accounts than information on aces.

A broad overview of the Corsair in World War II

The Corsair is hands down my favorite fighter of World War II, so I might be a little biased in my review. This books provides a very broad overview of the Corsair and the men who flew it in World War II, with several first-hand accounts of action against Japanese aircraft. I was pleasantly surprised to find this book also contained chapters on the Royal Navy's use of the Corsair, as well as the Royal New Zealand Air Force's.

Since this is one of the earliest books in Osprey's Aircraft of the Aces series, it just scratches the surface of the Corsair's service. Units such as VMF-214 (The Black Sheep) and VF-17 (The Jolly Rogers) get a bit more ink than others, but since the book is only 96 pages long, one can't expect details on every unit. The color plates are very nice, but since the U.S. Navy and Marines tended to not decorate their planes very much, they tend to all look fairly similar.

Pick up Walter Musciano's "Corsair Aces", Barrett Tillman's "Corsair" and Bruce Gamble's "Swashbucklers and Black Sheep" for greater details about the legendary Corsair.

Great book! Lots of information and picutres!

Mark Styling and Jerry Scutts have given the air enthusiasts, historians, and Corsair buffs another one in Osprey's "Aircraft of the Aces" series. Like the others, Corsair Aces of World War 2 contains a great deal of information and carefully selected photos. It has the usual collection of excellent illustrations, particularly color prints. This book covers a much overlooked area of aviation history dealing with Corsairs in the Pacific Theater and includes our allies. This book gives these outstanding pilots their due. Perfect for US Navy, US Marine Corps, and Allied Corsair enthusiasts. It is a great book and I recommend it highly. Corsair Aces of World War 2 is well worth having for anyone interested in the exploits of Corsair fighter pilots.

Ready to read some Spanish literature?

This book is perfect for the advanced student who is ready for the study of Spanish literature but is not ready for reading complete books. As one is reading the selections, there is a list of the more advanced vocabulary words that tell what they mean. This eliminates the need to refer constantly to a Spanish/English dictionary. Later there are questions and exercises to test one's knowledge of the selections. If one finishes this book, it will certainly be most beneficial. Good luck with your study of Spanish.

this book is a mistake

This book is a warmed over, self-published dissertation from The Institute for Transpersonal Psychology. The reviews and descriptions are misleading. (Georg Feuerstein should be ashamed of himself.) There is little useful information here--just retelling from some primary but mostly secondary sources. The book is superficial; there is little spiritual or psychological depth. How can anyone who writes seriously about Kundalini write this: "Sexual and materialistic excesses such as those of Bhagvan Rajneesh, who taught tantric practices in both India and the U.S., have further damaged the reputation of this ancient art, which is greatly misunderstood in the West." That's all she has to say about the Bhagvan, an incredibly influential and controversial teacher. Even if you disagree with his thought or practice how is it possible to write about Kundalini in the West and not reference his prolific contributions? If there is any virtue here it is that if you read at night the pedantic style will invite Morpheus almost instantaneously. Don't waste your money. There are many far better books available.
