First-rate introduction/tutorial

Disclaimer: I contributed a tiny bit of Linux-specific information to the book, so I might be a bit biased here.

I'm definitely biased by 20+ years of working with Csound, and as a long-time user I am pleased to see this book. There's no lack of documentation for Csound, but Csound Power provides a missing part - a normal user's introduction to the installation, configuration, and basic use of a deep and complex environment. Csound Power is relatively up-to-date (Csound development is a very active track), and the book's tutorial material includes an excellent introduction to Andres Cabrera's outstanding CsoundQt, a cross-platform IDE for writing, editing, and running Csound code. Other noteworthy material includes a great tutorial on building your own synthesizers (Jim's an expert on the topic) and a chapter titled "Thirty Opcodes You Must Know" that significantly reduces the new user's initial confusion when faced with Csound's hundreds of opcodes (i.e. processing modules). Another neat chapter presents the possibilities when Csound connects with other interesting music and sound software - e.g. Max/MSP, AbletonLive, Pure Data (Pd) - by using MIDI or OSC messaging, or by writing control programs in general-purpose computer languages such as Java and Python.

Minor critiques: No information regarding Csound on mobile devices, and no disc with code examples and other relevant material. Frankly, neither lack bothers me at all, but some may wonder why it's missing. Development of Csound for mobiles has only recently begun to move forward, I doubt there was much relevant information available while Jim wrote the book. Regarding the disc-with-code: Sorry, I'm Old Skool, I think it's good practice to copy the (usually brief) examples into an editor. After all, Csound is a programming language.

Jim Aikin is a well-known figure in the world of music technology, and his writing has always been clear, informative, and uncomplicated. Csound Power continues his fine work, to the great benefit of Csound users everywhere.

A welcome addition..

Csound Power is a welcome addition to the library of books dealing with this powerful audio program. I received my copy yesterday, and am about halfway through a first reading. The book is geared to be an introduction to creating music with csound, as opposed to a more in-depth explanation of all its features and uses. (For which see the Reference Manual and Boulanger's 'Csound', in particular). It compares to the recently released FLOSS manual for Csound in that it selects a subset of the 'unit generators' for discussion. But unlike the FLOSS manual, it goes into greater depth about installing and configuring both the Csound program and the Csoundqt front-end. The thirty-plus unit generators discussed are certainly enough to enable someone new to Csound to create interesting and/or remarkable music with the program, and they are certainly enough to establish a good base of understanding for further exploration. Along the way, the author includes his own tips for use and other bits of helpful information. Anyone with a basic knowledge of how sound is created and how music is organized will be able to profitably use the book. I was a bit surprised at the book itself. It's dimensions were large than I anticipated. The typeface is also a bit bigger than other Csound books I have, but not by a lot, and it does make reading easier for an old guy like me. There is no CD to accompany the text, so you'll need to type in the examples yourself. This is actually a good thing, since it's really the best (if not only) way to learn to use Csound anyway. If you want to learn Csound, you will if you use this book.
(Note: I'd give it five stars..but I'm not done reading it yet!!)

About the Author
Mary Jo Bowie is the owner of Health Information Professional Services in Binghamton, New York which provides medical record consultative services for various health facilities for over 25 years. She served as an instructor in the Health Information Technology Program at Broome Community College for over fifteen years, teaching such courses as Inpatient Coding, Ambulatory Care Coding, Quality Assurance, Survey of Healthcare and Computers in Healthcare. Ms. Bowie is now the Health Information Management and Medical Coding program director at Mount Wachusett Community College and an associate professor. She develops all course content within the curriculum to include ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM/PCS courses, CPT/HCPCS courses, Introduction and Advanced Health Data courses to name a few. Ms. Bowie is a registered Health Information Administrator and an accredited Health Information Technician. She is an active member of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and is also an AHIMA ICD-10-CM/PCS approved Train the Trainer. She served on the New York State Health Information Association Board of Directors from 1989 to 1991 and was education director and on the Ambulatory Coding Guideline Committee. Mary Jo Bowie was the New York State nominee for the National Award for Literacy Contribution to Profession, 1993 and 1994. She is a National and Regional speaker on ICD-9-CM, CPT and ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS, as well as a course writer for Cengage Learning. Ms. Bowie holds an Associate of Arts Degree, a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Master of Science Degree. She has conducted over 50 national training seminars on ICD-10-CM/PCS coding.

Regina Schaffer is a Reimbursement Educator Specialist for United Health Services in Johnson City, New York. She works with approximately 45 providers educating them on both ICD-9 and CPT coding. Ms. Schaffer also works as a consultant in Binghamton, New York and is an instructor in the Health Information Technology Program at Broome Community College. Ms. Schaffer is an active member of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), past secretary for the local AAPC Chapter from 2000 to 2002 and is a frequently requested speaker on ICD-9-CM and CPT Coding. Ms. Schaffer co-authored UNDERSTANDING ICD-9-CM and UNDERSTANDING PROCEDURAL CODING with Ms. Mary Jo Bowie. She is an accredited Health Information Technician, a Certified Professional Coder and holds a Bachelor of Science degree.

Having the ability to have my text book on my I-pad is great. I take my I-pad with me everywhere I go. If I have a few spare minutes at the office or waiting for an appointment, I can spend the time doing some reading. I wish all textbooks were available on my I-pad.

About the Author
Lyn Ragan knew at the age of fourteen that she would write a book one day. She subscribed to True Crime and True Detective, reading each edition faithfully while plotting her fiction novel she never wrote. Twenty-five years later, she met the love of her life never thinking she'd be involved in a real-life crime. After her fianc�'s murder, she followed his guidance by way of ADC's, (After Death Communications) and penned their first two books, Wake Me Up! Love and The Afterlife, and, We Need To Talk: Living With The Afterlife.

While writing her first novel, Lyn was introduced to the spiritual arts of energy work. She pursued meditation and went on to study Reiki Healing, Aura Energy, and Chakra Balancing. She later used her studies to become a professional Aura Photographer, an Ordained Minister, a Children's Book author, and a publisher. Lyn enjoys sharing her afterlife communications with Chip and hopes their story sheds new light on continuing relationships with loved ones passed. This book helped me to understand what my son is telling me, I bought the Kindle version and now I am going to buy 3 more copies (paperback) to share with my friends that lost their son a year ago and with my kids. When you start reading it you won't be able to put it down!

This book is saying that anything and everything can be a sign but doesn't tell you how to identify a true sign from normal everyday occurrences. It isn't that I disagree with what it says, I guess I was just hoping for more detail. I already know about the lights going off & on and the smell...such as cooking a favorite food, coffee or cigar. If you have no clue about signs this would be a good one to begin with but if you already know or have had some experience in this field this might not be too helpful.

About the Author
Margaret A. She is the author of over 70 articles on the topics of bargaining and negotiation and is the coauthor of three books.

His research investigates the stock price consequences that result from alternate financial reporting standards, changes in capital structure, changes in the money supply, and corporate disclosures, and his work has been published in prominent academic journals. He is an editor of the Journal of Accounting and Economics and has served as a consultant for General Electric and IBM, among other companies.

Do More than Read this Book --- Use It!

Getting (More of) What You Want: How the Secrets of Economics and Psychology Can Help You Negotiate Anything, in Business and in Life is Margaret Neale and Thomas Lys' valuable new book. I've known Maggie and Tom for decades, but friendship isn't needed to motivate this review. I need this book. I bought both electronic and hardcover versions because this is a book I'll use in my work -- and you should too.

IF YOU ARE A NEGOTIATION NOVICE
You should read this book because is provides an accessible foundation. I cover negotiation as part of my Plugged-In Management workshops and this will be the book I offer (at the end!) of the sessions I teach. The preface gives you a clear perspective on the power of a disciplined approach to negotiation. By the end of Chapter 4 you'll already have the ability to to get more of what you want. If you've been trying out the techniques as you read these chapters, you'll have already paid for the book and the time it took you to read them. Neale and Lys also have done a wonderful job distilling the material from their consulting and courses into clear frameworks and tables to support your preparation.

IF YOU ARE A SELF-TAUGHT NEGOTIATOR
This book will take experienced, self-taught negotiators to the next level. You’ll discover why your good techniques are working and how to improve on your results. I expect that even the most experienced negotiators will be interested in the results from recent research on negotiation and the connections across psychological and economic perspectives. Neale is the Adams Distinguished Professor of Management at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business. Lys is the Eric L. Kohler Chair in Accounting at Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management. Have no fear, this isn’t a textbook nor is it heavy statistics. What it is heavy with are solid examples and eye opening results. I've read the foundational research on whether or not to make the first offer -- and the systematic review provided in the book both extended what I knew and put it into actionable terms.

IF YOU’VE ALREADY HAD A GREAT NEGOTIATION CLASS
I suspect that even Neale & Lys’ students will find significant value in the summaries following each chapter. As soon as my hardcover arrives (this review is based on the Kindle version), I’ll be adding tabs so I can quickly flip to the summaries as preparation for any upcoming negotiation. No doubt you learned in your negotiation course that preparation and high expectations are critical to getting more of what you want. Use these summaries to kick off your preparations and problem solving efforts. Chapter 8, Managing the Negotiation: Supplementing and Verifying What You (Think You) Know will get special attention as it describes how to learn from the responses of the person you're negotiating with - a topic I know I need to give more attention.

IF YOU DON’T NEGOTIATE
Perhaps you don’t negotiate in a traditional sense -- but you do negotiate. Change management, technology implementations, teamwork, and social settings are all full of negotiations. In my book, The Plugged-In Manager, I rely on negotiation to help people leverage their human, technical, and organizational resources. I learned the basics and more from Maggie Neale and our colleague, Greg Northcraft. I recall feeling, and being, far more powerful once I understood the problem-solving nature of their negotiation practices.

CONCLUSION

Hey, get talking! Apparently most of us are failing to negotiate and show what we want; we are not even trying. Unbelievable or what?

Negotiation is everywhere, it is not just for high value purchases or for getting something that we want, it can be used for things we are rather adverse to, such as doing the washing up or emptying the bins.

In this engaging book, the authors seek to push the reader to knowingly try and negotiate in each and every situation. Built on a basis of economics and psychology, it can be quite surprising to learn what we are missing out on and what it might be costing us. This is not just a book for the inexperienced, even those who throw their hat into the negotiating ring from time to time can probably improve their game, boost their success rate and then some by taking the authors’ advice to heart.

In many businesses, people sometimes make a half-hearted approach to negotiate and the sales agents often know this. So the price might have a little more air in it so that the seller can be “knocked down” and the customer snaps the deal, thinking they’ve talked down a great bargain. Who is leading who by the nose? For those who don’t negotiate, it is even more profit for the seller. Not everything is negotiable, so don’t go hassling the counter staff at McDonald’s and expect a double cheeseburger for the price of a single, yet sometimes you can be surprised at the results you can get for a firm approach, a smile and bit of gumption. It is, though, more than just a potential money-saving book. It can be time saving, it can be situation enhancing. It can be, or lead to, a lot of things.

This book is not a simple read in some ways due to the sheer depth and quality of the information on offer. The wise reader will take time to enjoy its contents, focus on the knowledge being imparted and consider their future strategies. It is far from being a “ten tips to being a great hustler”-type of book. Thankfully. Of course, depending on your needs you can take the odd shortcut or two – but that would be a shame. It is a lot more than just a negotiator’s handbook.

For many the book might be a little too overwhelming as it is crammed full of academic references and further reading suggestions. Maybe the book’s publicity material gives a slightly optimistic impression about the book’s accessibility and it could possibly be lightened up a tad in places. Yet on balance, it still is a good book that has the potential to delight, even if you do skip bits here and there. If you are in the market for a academically-focussed book mixing psychology and economics together in a practical sense, maybe you are going to stumble over a little goldmine.

Don't even check it out from the library (as I did)

Very difficult to read. I stopped after the 3 chapter. I am sure that the authors are brilliant, but their writing is way beyond my meager comprehension. They don't need to write for idiots but wow. It reads like an ivy league B school textbook (and I suppose is appropriate for where the authors teach).

For example, the second chapter talks about the three types of issues in negotiation: congruent, distributive and integrative. If you can understand these three concepts and apply them effectively please call me anytime day or night; I would like to hear about it.

Although I probably knew this before, I have been permanently relieved of attending ivy league anything, and learning the art of negotiation from the authors.

About the Author
Professor Jan Machowski received his MSc and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering from Warsaw University of Technology in 1974 and 1979, respectively. After obtaining field experience in the Dispatching centre and several power plants, he joined the Electrical Faculty of Warsaw University of Technology where presently he is employed as a Professor and Director of the Power Engineering Institute. His areas of interest are electrical power systems, power system protection and control.

In 1989-93 Professor Machowski was a Visiting Professor at Kaiserslautern University in Germany where he carried out two research projects on power swing blocking algorithms for distance protection and optimal control of FACTS devices.

Professor Machowski is the co-author of three books published in Power System control and Stability (WPW, 2007). He is also a co-author of Power System Dynamics and Stability published by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd (1997).

Professor Machowski is the author and co-author of Power System stability and power system protection commissioned by the Polish Power Grid Company, electric Power Research Institute in the United States, Electrinstitut Milan Vidmar in Slovenia and Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Poland.

Professor Janusz Bialek received his MEng and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering from Warsaw University of Technology in 1977 and 1981, respectively. From 1981 to 1989 he was a lecturer with Warsaw University of Technology. In 1989 he moved to the University of Durham, United Kingdom, and since 2003 he has been at the University of Edinburgh where he currently holds the Bert Whittington Chair of Electrical Engineering. His main research interests are in sustainable energy systems, security of supply, liberalization of the electricity supply industry and power system dynamics and control.

Professor Bialek has co-authored two books and over 100 research papers. He has been a consultant to the Department of trade and Industry (DTI) of the UK government, Scottish Executive Elexon, Polish Power Grid Company, Scottish Power, Enron and Electrical Power Research Institute (EPRI). He was the Principal Investigator of a number of major research grants funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and DTI.

Professor Bialek is a member of the Advisor Board of Electricity Policy Research Group, Cambridge University, a member of the Dispute Resolution Panel for the Single Electricity Market Operator, Ireland, and Honorary Professor of Heriot-Watt University, Scotland.

Dr Jim Bumby received his BSc and PhD degrees in Engineering from Durham University, United Kingdom, in 1970 and 1974, respectively. From 1973 to 1978 he worked for the International Research and Development Company, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, on superconducting machines, hybrid vehicles and sea-wave energy. Since 1978 he has worked in the School of Engineering at Durham University where he is currently reader in Electrical Engineering. He has worked in the tear of electrical machines and systems for over 30 years, first in industry an then in academia.

Dr Bumby is the author or co-author of over 100 technical papers and two books in the general area of electrical machines/power systems and control. He has also written numerous technical reports for industrial prizes including the Institute of Measurement and Control prize for the best transactions paper in 1988 for work on hybrid electric vehicles and the IEE Power Division Premium in 1997 for work on direct drive permanent magnet generators for wind turbine applications. His current research interests are in novel generator technologies and their associated control for new and renewable energy systems.

Good mix of math and illustrations

Good for practical, illustrated descriptions of power system stability and control issues while still having a healthy amount of math. Complementary to Power System Stability and Control by Prabha Kundar, which has more math and a little less practical descriptions.

Great book!

This book is totally awesome! Very useful for ones whose major is power in EE. Explain every kind of power system danamics encountered in a practical power system and full of explicit mathematical and theoratical steps included. However, if you have no background in power system analysis and electrical machinery, it will be very hard for you to understand the details in the book. BTW, shipping very fast!
