The Treatment: The Story of Those Who Died in the Cincinnati Radiation Tests, by Martha Stephens

The Treatment is the story of one tragedy of medical research that stretched over eleven years and affected the lives of hundreds of people in an Ohio city. Thirty years ago the author, then an assistant professor of English, acquired a large set of little-known medical papers at her university. These documents told a grotesque story. Cancer patients coming to the public hospital on her campus were being swept into secret experiments for the U.S. military; they were being irradiated over their whole bodies as if they were soldiers in nuclear war. Of the ninety women and men exposed to this treatment, twenty-one died within a month of their radiations.
Martha Stephens’s report on these deaths led to the halting of the tests, but local papers did not print her charges, and for many years people in Cincinnati had no way of knowing that lethal experiments had taken place there. In 1994 other military tests were brought to light, and a yellowed copy of Stephens’s original report was delivered to a television newsroom. In Ohio, major publicity ensued—at long last—and reached around the world. Stephens uncovered the names of the victims, and a legal action was filed against thirteen researchers and their institutions. A federal judge compared the deeds of the doctors to the medical crimes of the Nazis during World War II and refused to dismiss the researchers from the suit. After many bitter disputes in court, they agreed to settle the case with the families of those they had afflicted. In 1999 a memorial plaque was raised in a yard of the hospital.
Who were these doctors and why had they done as they did? Who were the people whose lives they took? Who was the reporter who could not forget the story, the young attorney who first developed the case, the judge who issued the historic ruling against the doctors? This is Stephens’s moving account of all that transpired in these lives and her own during this epic battle between medicine and human rights.

From Publishers Weekly
From 1960 to 1972, a grisly and highly suspect research project was carried out in the bowels of Cincinnati General Hospital. Cancer patients, most of them in advanced stages of the disease, were exposed to massive quantities of radiation over long and continuous periods of time. Nearly all of them (over 100 altogether) died within weeks or months of the start of the irradiation "therapy." In 1971 Stephens, a professor of English at the University of Cincinnati, began to make inquiries about the Cincinnati project; despite the hospital authorities' reluctance, she eventually gained access to files documenting the treatments. They were, she says, horrifying records of misery, incompetence and medical hubris, and Stephens dedicated the next 30 years to publicizing them. Unfortunately, the story she relates here is less concerned with the patients than with herself: only about 70 pages are actually dedicated to a description and analysis of the experiments, while the rest of the book is a detailed, boring and highly self-serving account of the author's experiences with the press and the courts. While there appears to be little doubt that the Cincinnati project was a grotesque abuse of medical ethics and simple human decency, Stephens seems positively to revel in it as proof of the racism (most of the patients were black) and mendacity of the medical and political establishment. And while her dedication in bringing the case to light is admirable, her presentation of the parties involved ("She had believed the doctors, had automatically believed the doctors. I didn't feel she cared about common people but only about important people.") is as tendentious as it is simplistic. B&w photos.

From Library Journal
From 1960 through 1971, more than 80 cancer patients were treated with partial or total body radiation at Cincinnati General Hospital as part of an experiment conducted on behalf of the U.S. Department of Defense. A number of the patients died a short time after the radiation exposure, which was administered in an attempt to simulate the possible effects of nuclear war on soldiers. While the experiments were kept relatively quiet until 1994, the project raised serious issues relating to informed consent, the appropriateness of the treatment, and the intent of the research. These concerns eventually led to extensive investigations, a congressional hearing, and a lengthy lawsuit. A novelist and former professor of English, Stephens (Children of the World) is active in many social causes and was a member of a junior faculty organization that first attempted to raise awareness of this project in the 1970s. Based on hospital records, interviews with the victims' families, government reports, and University of Cincinnati disclosures, the book provides a shocking example of why we must remain diligent in our review of medical research. From The New England Journal of Medicine
In a research project that has come to exemplify radiation experiments in humans during the Cold War, physicians at the University of Cincinnati, led by Eugene Saenger and under contract from the Department of Defense, conducted total-body or partial-body radiation in 88 patients with cancer between 1960 and 1972. Although many particulars are disputed, the consensus is that without funding from the Department of Defense, Saenger would not have undertaken the research, that the Department of Defense was eager to learn more about the physiological effects of high levels of radiation in order to protect military forces against it, that the patients themselves had metastatic cancer but were ambulatory (and many of them were still working), and that such an intervention had been well tested to determine its therapeutic potential and had been found to be ineffective. Why, then, was Saenger conducting the research? What were patients told? Was the research unethical by the standards of the time? Should Cincinnati take its place along with Tuskegee and Willowbrook in the roll of dishonor in the history of experimentation involving humans? These questions have not been unexplored. Three committees, one external and two internal to the University of Cincinnati, examined them in the early 1970s. The 1973 hearings led by Senator Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) on the ethics of human experimentation -- which led to the establishment of regulations for institutional review boards -- also raised such questions. The Final Report of the President's Advisory Committee on Human Radiation Experiments, issued in 1995, devoted an entire chapter to experiments in total-body irradiation, with most of it focused on the Cincinnati research. Finally, a suit in federal court, presided over by Judge Sandra Beckwith, addressed the major points under dispute. Given all this attention, a book devoted to this episode is warranted. Judge Beckwith herself found the Cincinnati case to be "a singular case in terms of having public interest," and the amount of surviving documentation, including extensive patient records, certainly justifies further analysis. Martha Stephens has many credentials that are relevant to this assignment. She was among the first faculty members at the university to become concerned about the research; she had access to some of the most important records; and she moved energetically and persistently to bring the events to public attention. Although she is not a scientist or an expert in radiation -- she is a professor of English, now retired -- the medical and scientific facts are within her grasp. Her book describes the difficulty of capturing the attention of the press, the resistance of the university to pressure from junior faculty members, the inadequacy of the ostensible process of consent for the human subjects, the long and frustrating class-action lawsuit, and most moving of all, the ways in which the research affected the lives of the subjects and their families. On the whole, however, The Treatment is a disappointing effort, failing to structure a coherent account of the events or to offer original insights into the dynamics behind them. Stephens keeps her focus very narrow, and her narrative is part autobiography, part expose, and part a settling of scores. We learn which local reporters were the first to pick up the story and which were not, but apart from the bestowal of individual compliments, no larger themes emerge. There are some heavy-handed comments about newspaper chains and about an absence of "news from the point of view of common people seeking to resist the assault on their incomes and way of life," but Stephens does not give us overarching insights into the crucial role of the press and its strengths and weaknesses in moving an expose forward. Nor does she successfully anchor the events in the history of human experimentation. She mentions, of course, Nuremberg and Tuskegee and recapitulates an article or two by well-known scholars, but she gives us little understanding of where Cincinnati fits into this grim tradition. She does supply details on the class-action proceedings but offers no overview of the advantages and disadvantages of using courts to these ends. Even more telling, Stephens does not attempt to penetrate the mindset of the investigators -- not that such knowledge would bring forgiveness, but it might enable us to understand why they did what they did and how we might prevent such practices in the future. She is apparently too angry to carry out such an exercise and is more determined to ponder whether "there is a deep grain of wrongfulness in some human creatures." When she reviews "the mysterious horror of what had taken place," she concludes, "I almost do believe in human depravity without explanation." In this spirit, Stephens is more eager to tell us that the patients were not at death's door than to help us think about the meaning that cancer and terminal illness have for physicians' clinical practices and research ethics. She notes but does not emphasize enough the fact -- fully documented in the report of the President's Advisory Committee -- that in the 1970s, total-body irradiation was already well outside the boundary of acceptable medical practice and the even more damning fact that patients were not given antiemetic drugs to alleviate the painful effects of the radiation (for fear that such a practice would reduce the value of the findings for the Department of Defense). Readers who want to grasp quickly the essentials of the Cincinnati research should consult the Advisory Committee's report. Those who want a more discursive account of what it takes to correct medical and governmental malfeasance should read Stephens's book. In either case, they will come to appreciate the plaque that was put up, as Stephens tells us, in an out-of-the-way spot behind the hospital. A result of the court settlement, it reads, in part: "The Cincinnati citizens listed below were the innocent victims of human radiation experiments in this hospital from 1960 to 1972. Their names are placed here so that all may remember their injuries and afflictions, and their unwitting sacrifice in a project sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense and carried out by professors in the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine." The Accurate and Compelling Book on Radiation Experiments in Cincinnati
By retired professor
The Treatment tells the story of a horrifying miscarriage of medical research in the sixties. At least ninety-nine individuals were affected. They were irradiated over their whole bodies, or sometimes half their bodies, in a huge Cobalt-60 machine in the basement of Cincinnati General Hospital, and twenty-one died within about a month of being exposed. They were patients coming to a hospital cancer clinic when they were swept into this study funded by the Department of Defense. They and their families thought they were being treated for their disease, but University of Cincinnati doctors working with the military were trying to find out what would happen to soldiers in nuclear war.
Part One of this book outlines the long struggle of Stephens and her associates to bring this project to light. In 1994 she was able to uncover, with the help of a student at the university, the full names of the subjects and to initiate a lawsuit. Part Two provides the medical facts of the research over eleven years and how it affected each victim -- and in particular a group of surviving families the writer came to know well. Part Three describes each stage of the five years of litigation in federal court, which ended in 1999 in a settlement by the doctors of five million dollars.
Stephens writes that she had come to think of the people of this drama as "an invisible army that fought by night," unaware, that is, of what was happening to them and the military role they were performing.
This book seems to be widely read and to have had many good reviews. I notice that The Journal of American History considers it "a comprehensive and powerful account of one of the most important radiation experiments performed on unsuspecting civilians in post-World War II America."

A Story That Needed to Be Told
By Randy Nissen
I first heard of the Cincinnati radiation tests when some high school students of mine chose the subject for a history project. They immediately identified Martha Stephens as the key researcher of this horrible chapter of medical ethics being sacrificed in the name of national security. This book is an exhaustively researched and compellingly told by Mrs. Stephens, whose objectivity and scholarship were not compromised in her attempt to seek justice for the victims. This should be required reading in medical ethics classes and by people in power who are weighing individual rights against national security.

Superb muck-rake!
By Gene B
Truth-dedicated & well documented, this book by Prof. Stephens reveals medical experimentation cover-ups previously unknown to me. "Settled" finally in 1999, this case deserves "best seller" status along with classics such as
"Lies My Teacher Told Me..."(-Loewen). I try to tell everyone I know about these ageless icon-breakers.

A magnificent read!
By Phyllis Grifman
I just finished reading Sharavogue, a first novel by author Nancy Blanton that does not at all read like it's her first work of historical fiction. Set in Ireland, the Caribbean and England in a time of upheaval and social unrest, the research is impeccable. The novel's young female protagonist, Elvy, is the heroine who captures us from the outset, beginning with her self introduction: "From the beginning, all I had ever wanted was to live my destiny." And what a life she sets out on! This is more than a coming-of-age story set in a dystopian past, it is a fully rendered telling of peasant life in Ireland, slavery in Montserrat, and finally, the court of self appointed "Lord's Protector" Oliver Cromwell.

What sets Sharavogue apart from other historical fiction is the authentic sense of place and voice that author Nancy Blanton has been able to conjure. No doubt her research took years to lead to the conception of this compelling story. Each voice is a unique one, each setting fully realized and beautifully described. The writing is exquisite, the story impossible to forget, the characters rich and fully rounded. Bravo!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book!
By Kathy
As a fan of historical fiction, I thoroughly enjoyed Ms. Blanton's compelling 17th-century story of Sharavogue. I enjoyed the tumultuous ride with Elvy, a strong-spirited young Irish patriot who flees mortal danger at home only to find herself snatched into indentured servitude on a distant island plantation. The story's language beautifully depicts the period and the predicaments she faced. The author paid particular attention to the complexity of the relationships that evolved among the slaves, servants and landowners of the plantation. Elvy did make it home and I would love to read more about her in a second novel.

In the commercial part we review solutions of the leading DLP market players based on professional research reports and material obtained from the websites of the vendors. In the academic part we cluster the academic work according to the nature of the leakage and protection into various categories. Finally, we describe main data leakage scenarios and present for each scenario the most relevant and applicable solution or approach that will mitigate and reduce the likelihood and/or impact of the leakage scenario.

Review

From the reviews:

“‘Springer Briefs’ is a series of short books to help information and communications technology (ICT) professionals learn about new or unfamiliar technologies. This work is from that series, providing an introduction to the detection of corporate data loss and leaks. … the book amounts to a good, concise brief for quickly coming to grips with the basics of protecting corporate data from leakage and loss. … There is a good table of contents and a thorough list of references.” (David B. Henderson, ACM Computing Reviews, September, 2012)

Great Book, and Much Cheaper Than The "College Version"
By RammerJammer
I am in culinary school and this is the required text for our classes. After hours of researching online, and even taking the time to call the publisher, I finally decided to take a risk by buying this "Trade" version rather than the "College Version," offered here on Amazon and in our school's bookstore. Rest assured! This book is EXACTLY the same as the "College Version," but it doesn't include the CulinarE Companion CD (which our school does not utilize anyway)! I even had the instructors at school ask the publisher about the differences, and they admitted that there are none! All of the recipes and page numbers match up identically. Save yourself the $36+ dollars and buy this version instead of getting ripped off by a marketing scam to get more money out of students by calling a book the "College Version" - I'm glad I did!

We are just getting into the book, so I can't offer too much of an opinion, but from what I've seen so far, I'm impressed! I just wanted to add my review so that hopefully another student like myself can save some money. I hope it helps!

Amazing!!!
By Allan Elder
I discovered cooking through a Great Courses program from The Teaching Company and wanted to further my education (you should get that course). This book is HUGE! It covers everything. However, if you don't already know a little about cooking, its format can lose you. Here's how I am using it: I find a recipe for a complete dinner I like and then I find the references to the techniques required in this book. After some study and note taking, I am ready to cook. The book is really formatted for having a cooking teacher. I can't use it that way. For example, the chapter cutting and chopping food is great, but you will never do all that cutting and chopping for any meal. So, if you need to cut up carrots for a meal, go to that section and learn what to do - skip the rest. Also, I found the website software a waste. Maybe I just don't know how to use it properly, but for me it's worthless. Final analysis, if you want a complete text to improve your cooking, buy this book and you will always have a resource that tells you what to do. The next time a recipe uses some strange word, turn to the index, find the page, study, and cook. The results? Delicious!

Excellent book - check what you are (not) getting with the Kindle version before purchasing!
By ec-user
The book content is awesome, very well written and explanations are very good. Some sections need to be read several times because there is so much information in each phrase that you are probably missing additional useful content. Still easy to read though.

A few things to take into consideration before purchasing: This book is pretty big and heavy physically, so I went for the Kindle version. while it is a book printout and you can't get the nice features of a real Kindle book. It's still alright if you can live with it, which is my case.

The 4/5 stars is because the physical version comes with a code to download a menu-making software that the electronic version doesn't have (as it comes as a separate piece of paper). You can only get it with the physical version or purchase the code separately for 40$. Not a good deal in my opinion.

God without Parts: Divine Simplicity and the Metaphysics of God's Absoluteness, by James E. Dolezal

The doctrine of divine simplicity has long played a crucial role in Western Christianity's understanding of God. It claimed that by denying that God is composed of parts Christians are able to account for his absolute self-sufficiency and his ultimate sufficiency as the absolute Creator of the world. If God were a composite being then something other than the Godhead itself would be required to explain or account for God. If this were the case then God would not be most absolute and would not be able to adequately know or account for himself without reference to something other than himself. This book develops these arguments by examining the implications of divine simplicity for God's existence, attributes, knowledge, and will. Along the way there is extensive interaction with older writers, such as Thomas Aquinas and the Reformed scholastics, as well as more recent philosophers and theologians. An attempt is made to answer some of the currently popular criticisms of divine simplicity and to reassert the vital importance of continuing to confess that God is without parts, even in the modern philosophical-theological milieu.

Review
"Dr. James Dolezal's treatment of divine simplicity, which provides a defense of this doctrine in perhaps its strongest form, is a first-rate piece of work . . . [It] is the best full-length philosophical treatment of divine simplicity that I know."
-Paul Helm
Teaching Fellow
Regent College, Vancouver

"James E. Dolezal has authored a philosophically rigorous and theologically thorough defense of divine simplicity, and he has done so for positive reasons. For Dolezal, the whole rationale for defending the simplicity of God is to assure that we actually come to know, though not fully comprehend, God as he truly is--the God of reason and revelation, the God of the Christian philosophical and theological tradition. Dolezal has made a very admirable and extremely significant contribution to the discussion of God's simplicity."
-Thomas G. Weinandy, OFM, Cap.
United States Conference of Catholic Bishops

"At a time when the simplicity of God has fallen on hard times, James Dolezal does a fine job of navigating current objections to this central aspect of theology proper. In particular, Dolezal shows the intimate relationship between those who would affirm God's absolute character, and an affirmation of divine simplicity. He brings Aquinas' affirmation of simplicity into the contemporary debate in a way that Thomas himself might have done."
-K. Scott Oliphint
Westminster Theological Seminary

"James Dolezal offers an exceptionally rich, lucid, and creative insight into the meaning and significance of the doctrine of God's simplicity. Engaging in a lively, sincere discussion with the major contemporary opponents and with representatives of the broad theological tradition, he gives not only a thorough introduction, but also advances the debate: Dolezal translates the discussion about ontotheology into an analytical framework and suggests a new solution for the compatibility of God's simplicity and freedom."
-Harm Goris
Tilburg University

"God without Parts is a valuable contribution to the field of philosophical-theology. Looking to the thought of Thomas Aquinas, James Dolezal carefully presents the logical coherence of the doctrine of divine simplicity, cogently illustrating how the doctrine is a necessary ontological condition for affirming God's absoluteness with regard to his existence, essence, knowledge, and will. This work will be a welcome addition to the libraries of philosophers and theologians alike."
-Gregory T. Doolan
The Catholic University of America --Wipf and Stock Publishers

Dolezal s book is a delight to read insightful, well-research, and clearly written. . . . Most especially, it is a prophetic work, providing a resounding call to recover and reaffirm the absolute God of the Christian tradition who is not pieced together from univocal fragments of human thought but is rather the transcendent Creator who has formed us in his own image and likeness. The Thomist

God without Parts deals with an important topic in philosophical theology, and anyone interested in the fate of the [doctrine of divine simplicity] should read it. . . . an instructive study of a difficult problem, written in scrupulously sober prose. Heythrop Journal

This book is a good and useful addition to the literature on the Doctrine of Divine Simplicity. Faith and Philosophy

God without Parts is meticulously researched, cogently argued, and eminently readable. . . . both an excellent study of the historic doctrine of divine simplicity and a rigorous defense of the doctrine with the contemporary philosophical and theological context. Philosophia Christi

James Dolezal s work not only manages to capture the wide-ranging significance of [divine simplicity], but also skillfully exposits the Christian tradition by leveraging the traditional [doctrine] to profitably engage contemporary philosophical suspicions. Scottish Bulletin of Evangelical Theology

[T]he book represents the most thorough and up-to-date explication and defense of the doctrine of divine simplicity from within the Protestant tradition. Dolezal has given us a fine example of Reformed philosophical theology: historically informed, confessionally observant, ecumenically oriented, and analytically rigorous. A faithful defense of a Christian doctrine
By Robert D. LaRocca
James E. Dolezals' book is among the best and most vitally needed accounts of the doctrine of God written in the past few decades. The doctrine of divine simplicity is the doctrinal foundation for God's aseity, immutability, infinity, and omniscience - indeed God's very absoluteness. That Dolezal was able to explicate and defend the doctrine so clearly and convincingly is a remarkable service for a contemporary theological comprehension of God's absolute nature.

It is important to note that the conclusions wrought in "God without Parts" are not the product of an autonomous natural theology. Instead, "God without parts" seeks to explicate the words of the Westminster Confession of Faith which stipulates that God is "without body, parts, or passions..." Therefore this book should be commended to any pastor or student who wishes to understand the meaning of the Westminster Confession, especially as Dolezal enters into the 17th century English divine's thought-world and uses their philosophical assumptions in his presentation of the uncompounded God. And while the book is written with Reformed convictions, there is a catholicity that is upheld throughout. If the many various theological traditions are to come to any agreement on the doctrine of salvation or the doctrine of the church, they must first concur on the absolute nature of the God Christians are to worship.

Right now, especially in the evangelical world, and even amongst those who consider themselves in line with Reformed Orthodoxy, there is an unfortunate lack of understanding of the sheer metaphysical austerity and intellectual complexity of the classic denial of composition in God. Even more disappointing, there is little acknowledgement of the disastrous theological consequences that must obtain if divine simplicity is denied, as it is denied in so many theological sectors. With this in view, I cannot recommend any other work that would clarify and faithfully represent the kinds of parts that are being denied of God by classical Christian theism. While much of the book takes its cue from Aquinas, there is also plenty of interaction with the Reformed tradition, with which Dolezal mainly agrees, and contemporary analytic philosophy of religion, which Dolezal mainly attacks.

There is one caution that should be registered: Dolezal's book explains the metaphysical tools with which he is working, but it would help the reader to have some background in classical metaphysics (especially Thomistic metaphysics). For this, Joseph Owen's "Elementary Christian Metaphysics" is a good introduction and glossary of the kinds of concepts used throughout Dolezal's book. This is not to say Dolezal's "God without Parts" does not stand alone, only that denying parts in God assumes some philosophical grasp of what parts are.

A Much Needed Defense of an Important Doctrine
By Nathanael Johnston
James Dolezal's book is an excellent defense of the vitally important but much maligned and often misunderstood doctrine of divine simplicity. Dolezal's aim is to defend the doctrine against its recent critics and to show how the doctrine is foundational for the doctrines of God's aseity, immutability, infinity, and omniscience.

Dolezal's primary opponents are analytical philosophers of religion and evangelical theologians influenced influenced by them. Dolezal builds his defense of the doctrine of divine simplicity primarily on the work of Aquinas and contemporary Thomists although Dolezal also interacts positively with the early church fathers and the Reformed tradition, especially 16th and 17th century theologians.

Dolezal makes a convincing case for the continuing importance of divine simplicity. Given the centrality of the doctrine for orthodox theology from the church fathers to the Reformers it is shocking to see how easily it is rejected by many Protestant theologians today. Hopefully, Dolezal's book will at least cause people to think twice about rejecting the doctrine. Prospective readers should be warned that the book, which began life as a dissertation, contains quite a lot of philosophical discussion that employs a large number of technical terms, both scholastic and analytical. However, given the importance of the doctrine and the excellence of its defense in this book, the perseverance of the reader is commended. There is no other book like this one on the market.

Highly recommended.

Strong Defense of the Doctrine of Divine Simplicity
By Nate Claiborne
As you can gather from the subtitle, the focus of Dolezal's work is the attribute of divine simplicity, which he sees as "indispensable for the traditional understanding of doctrines such as God's aseity, unity, infinity, immutability, and eternity" (67). What you cannot gather from the subtitle is that this work is heavily indebted to Thomas Aquinas, and Dolezal takes readers through a guided tour of his writings on the topic. In essence then, it is a kind of exercise in retrieval theology. That is, Dolezal takes us back to Aquinas in order to answer modern objections to a traditionally held understanding of the doctrine of God.

Chapter 1 charts the landscape of modern thought on the doctrine of divine simplicity. Dolezal wants the reader to understand the objections that have been raised before he begins his defense of the doctrine of divine simplicity (which gets abbreviated DDS). Chapter 2 then explains the philosophical nature of composition, that is, what it would mean to be composed of "parts." This is done in order to contrast with the notion of simplicity. With this foundation laid, Dolezal can turn in chapter 3 to give the theological rationale for the DDS itself. It is here that Dolezal argues that DDS "supplies the strength of absoluteness" to the attributes of God I mentioned above. This thread of the argument continues into chapter 4 and 5, the former focusing on simplicity and aseity, and the latter on simplicity and the other attributes. The final two chapters discuss issues related to DDS and God's absolute knowledge and DDS and divine freedom.

To give you a feel for Dolezal's writing style as well as to sum up his argument, here is part of his conclusion:

It has been my contention throughout this study that unless God is identical with all that is in him, and it entirely devoid of all passive potency, one cannot designate him as "most absolute." If he were composed of parts then whatever absoluteness he exhibited would have to be correlative to those parts and thus weakened by relativity, contingency, and dependence. What's more, without an absolutely simple God who is identical with all that is in him, one can offer no account of God or for anything else. If God is not the ontological sufficient reason for himself and all other things then he is not God (213).

On the basis of Dolezal's study, he believes then that "dispensing with the DDS is not advisable" (216). I would heartily agree.

A major strength of Dolezal's work is his style of writing. As you might be able to tell from the extended quote above, he uses short sentences and writes clear, crisp prose. In reading through the book, I found his discussions on DDS much easier to follow than, for instance, Scott Oliphint's God With Us. Given the dense philosophical nature of doctrines like divine simplicity (and the other connected attributes), it is a corner of the theological world that is usually accessible to only a few. While God without Parts is not going to be flying off the shelves at the local Lifeway Christian Stores, it is a very readable book given its subject matter.

Additionally, the book is a very strong contribution to the discussion of DDS. As Dolezal argues, and other theologians pre- and post- Aquinas have as well, this is an important doctrine and there is much at stake in choosing to abandon it. Dolezal mounts an impressive defense in a relatively short space (slightly over 200pgs) and I think his work merits interaction from any future thinkers who might question the efficacy of holding to DDS.

From my perspective at least, there is little to criticize in Dolezal's work. Part of this is that I already agreed with his position before reading the book, but part of it is that I thought it was a well written book. The chapters were not too overwhelmingly long, and Dolezal did a fine job of summarizing in the appropriate places (beginnings and ends of chapters). My one complaint was the abundance of untranslated Latin, but it is hard to imagine the train of thought being able to move as smoothly without the Latin shorthand. It may make the book heavier lifting for some readers who would otherwise be interested, but repetitive lifting builds mental muscles, and the next thing you know you'll be digging up diamonds.
