Dr Simon Clarke is a practicing textile designer and artist, specializing in digital design, who has exhibited his work internationally. He is a Senior Lecturer in Printed Textile Design on the BA (Hons) Textile Design course at University College Falmouth, UK, where he is also Pathway Leader for the MA in Textile Design. He has lectured at Kenyatta University in Kenya and Savannah College of Art and Design in the USA.

About the Author

James A. Morone (B.A., Middlebury College, and M.A. and PhD, University of Chicago) is Professor of Political Science at Brown University and five-time winner of the Hazeltine Citation for outstanding teacher of the year. A renowned scholar of American Political Science, Dr. Morone, an award-winning author, has published eight books including The Heart of Power (2009), Hellfire Nation (2003), and The Democratic Wish (1990). He served as President of the Politics and History Section of the American Political Science Association from 1999-2000 and the New England Political Science Association from 2002-03. He has been on the board of editors for eight scholarly journals and comments on politics in The New York Times, The London Review of Books, and The American Prospect.

Rogan Kersh (M.A. and PhD, Yale) is Provost and Professor of Political Science at Wake Forest University. A leading scholar in American Political Science, Dr. Kersh is best known for his work on health reform, obesity politics, and interest groups/lobbying. From 2006-12 he served as Associate Dean of the Wagner School of Public Service at New York University, where he built an undergraduate program, helped conceive and create NYU's new campus in Abu Dhabi, and was integral in the launch of a new Global Institute of Public Health. Dr. Kersh has published two books, more than fifty academic articles, and has provided commentary on U.S politics for dozens of different media outlets including CNN, Newsweek, and The New York Times. He was President of the American Political Science Association's organized section on Health Politics and Policy in 2011-12, and is an elected Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration.

This is not the "full" edition!

Warning! Amazon's "" make no mention of the fact that this is the "Brief Second Edition," but in fact these ISBNs are indeed for the brief version. The only clue that as to which version this item is appears in the image of the cover, in tiny dark blue print.

A book I can happily recommend

Why I Choose this Book:

The title should be a sufficient explanation. :)

What I Thought About this Book:

It was really good. It was also one of those books that can't be gulped down, because, well, it's just *wrong* to slurp a book up in a couple of sittings when it talks so much about slowing down and spending time with God and listening for Him.

That, by the way, is my big take-away from the book. I have a hard time slowing down and spending time listening for God's voice. My imagination is so active that I have a hard time clearing it of activity to just be still, but that is something I'm working on. In the past I've prayer journaled a lot which really helps me to keep focus. Because of a wrist injury though, I haven't done as much journaling or typing in the last few months, and so I'd been just praying instead of prayer journaling. Going back to prayer journaling (something this book encouraged), was helpful and I realized how much I've missed it.

Mr. Goll's writing style is quite practical and easy to understand. The way he talks about God was really encouraging. It's obvious he views God with reverence, but also sees Him as a loving Friend and Father. In fact, he refers to God multiple times as "Papa God" which I really liked. Mr. Goll is personable in the book, sharing some of the things he struggled with, as well as times God worked through him.

Conclusion:

The book was easy-to-understand, challenging, practical, and a very worth-while read. Plus, the cover is beautiful, which is a plus.

I'm giving Hearing God's Voice Today 4 stars out of 5, and 8 stars out of 10. I happily recommend it.

“As it was in the beginning”… and so starts this book; “Hearing God’s Voice Today; Practical help for Listening to Him and Recognizing His voice” by James Goll. In this book the author takes us right there… to the beginning and from there offers the readers the tools necessary and equips them draw nearer to God and truly believe that He wants to speak to us. In this book, we learn to recognize His voice while overcoming what gets in the way of that.

This book is such a great how-to guide to conversing with the King. My favorite quote from page 56 – “As full citizens and members of this royal priesthood of the Lord, we have the right to request, at any time, a personal audience with the Master of the universe. We can come boldly before His throne of grace to bring our request”.

Do not merely read this book for the sake of reading. Slow down and digest all that it has to offer. Slow down and listen. Slow down and hear His voice.

About the Author
Euclid Seeram is a full time Faculty member of the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) and teaches in the Medical Radiography Diploma Program. In addition he is the Program Head and Teaching Faculty for the Bachelor of Technology Degree Program in Medical Imaging. Euclid has published over 35 papers in professional radiologic technology journals and has had 16 textbooks published to date. Topics of these books include: CT, Computers in Radiology, Radiographic Instrumentation, Digital Radiography, and Radiation Protection. Euclid has co-authored a book on Digital X-Ray Imaging (in press) with Drs Patrick Brennan and Mark McEntee of University College Dublin. Currently he serves on several Medical Imaging Editorial Boards, including the Journal of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences; Radiography, an International Journal of Diagnostic Imaging and Radiation Therapy; Biomedical Imaging and Intervention Journal based in Malaysia. Additionally he serves as a peer reviewer for the Journal of Allied Health. In February 2009 he was invited to serve as Editor-in-Chief for Radiography for e-Health Professionals, a new on-line Journal dedicated to all healthcare professionals. In 2000 Euclid was awarded the Fellowship from the CAMRT; an honor bestowed upon highly regarded professionals who have demonstrated an uncommonly high degree of competence and personal commitment to their profession. His current research interests are related to radiation dose in CT, and radiation dose optimization in computed radiography systems.

Not The Highest Quality Binding

This Book Had All The Basics I Needed To Follow Along In Class. However, I Was Disappointed Because The Binding Started Falling Apart Like The Glue Wasn't Strong Enough To Withstand Someone Turning The Pages So, They Would Randomly Fall Out. Not The Best Quality.

Hard to finish

It was really hard to get into this book. The beginning introduces many characters that are of no importance and it just became confusing. The H and h 's relationship does not even come to fruition until much later in the book. But my main issue is the amount of rape in this book. There should be a warning regarding this because the h is abused way to much in my opinion. There is a HEA at the end but it is a long and depressing road to get there .

Best Mafia romance I have ever read

The first part of the book is filler - you can probably skip the entire section without detracting from the story. But get past this first part and you are in for a real shock. You know how in romance books villains aren't really very evil? Well, not Palladio. He is a sociopathic, obsessively possessive ex-con who works as an enforcer for a drug lord - and he is fixated on poor Novella. Palladio doesn't make threats...he just goes into action, as Novella finds out. If you like your romance with a whole lot of violence then you won't be disappointed.

Has Potential but....

First the Author introduces way to many unimportant characters. I kept expecting them to pop up further along in the book since she went into such detail describing people, however that was not the case and it was very confusing. Second I agree with a previous reviewer about the heroine and the abuse she suffered. It was repetitive, brutal and hard to believe she wasn't more traumatized. I also would have preferred the heroine to be a little bit older and show more emotion when it came to her sister. I was able to finish the book and did purchase the second. Other than those few criticisms I did enjoy reading it and at times found it hard to put down.

Pierre Hadot is arguably one of the most influential and wide-ranging historians of ancient philosophy writing today. As well as having an important influence on the work of Michel Foucault, Hadot's work has been pivotal in the development of contemporary French philosophy. His work is currently concerned with a redefinition of modern philosophy through a study of ancient life and ancient philosophical texts.

This book presents a history of spiritual exercises from Socrates to early Christianity, an account of their decline in modern philosophy, and a discussion of the different conceptions of philosophy that have accompanied the trajectory and fate of the theory and practice of spiritual exercises. Hadot's book demonstrates the extent to which philosophy has been, and still is, above all else a way of seeing and of being in the world.

Chasing after that flirt, Wisdom.

I am not sure this is the best introduction to Hadot's approach to philosophy. "What is Ancient Philosophy?" is more of one piece. Which makes sense because what we have in this book is a collection of articles, addresses and an interview that have been loosely woven together.
But this volume has some particular strengths. Arnold Davidson's introduction is brilliant. He manages to introduces the main themes of investigation throughout Hadot's life (Hadot passed away just a few months ago). Davidson also makes it clear that Hadot's insights into ancient philosophy are based on his work as a translator of works from that period.
Another strength is that many of the articles collected here show off the extraordinary cultural learning of Hadot. I remarked in my review of "What is Ancient Philosophy?" that reading Hadot is to be introduced to the work of generations of French and German scholars of whom most Americans know nothing (would someone please translate Groethuyson's "Anthropologie philosophique" for me? Please?)
But in this book, Hadot also demonstrates his remarkable grasp of such diverse thinkers as Nietzsche, Montaigne, Goethe, Wittgenstein, Merleau-Ponty and Foucault. I always walk away from reading Hadot feeling as if I am both the Nitwit of Western Culture and exhilarated by some of the connections that he has made.

Hadot is particularly famous in France for his work as a translator/commentator of Plotinus and Marcus Aurelius. Early textual work on those two and other philosophers led Hadot to the realization that many of the works of the Hellenistic period were being misunderstood because today's interpreters were not seeing these works for what they were. Today's philosophers, for the most part, write dissertations that try to lay out exactly what the author wants to say. The work is usually directed toward a professional audience or, at least, toward expert amateurs. The intent is to inform and convince.
Hadot's central insight into Hellenistic philosophy is that, for most of the writings that we have
extant, the intent is to (re)form, not to inform. In other words, this is philosophy that is meant to change the way we live. More deeply, it is meant to change the way we see the world, the way we feel about our lives and the way we treat each other.
As such, the types of writings that we have from this period have to be understood for the literary types that they are; exhortations to oneself to remember the main dicta that one has learned or rhetorical works designed to convince the uninitiated to follow the path of a particular philosophical school, etc. What is so immediately convincing about this point is that it makes sense of all the repetitions, contradictions and eclecticism which is so evident in the writings of some of the ancients. The first article in this collection explores how the failure of recent interpreters to understand this aspect of ancient philosophical literature has led to many misinterpretations (although Hadot is careful to point out that some of the misreadings have been very fruitful).
The Second Part of this book may be the best. This contains Hadot's classic article on "Spiritual Exercises". In this article, Hadot first outlined his realization that many of the writings of the Hellenistic philosophers were really meant to be read as exercises that would help instill in the philosopher the teachings of that particular school. I have become convinced from my own readings that he is absolutely right about the necessity of this approach. If you want to understand your reading of Seneca, of Marcus Aurelius, of Cicero, Epictetus and even of the earlier Greeks (like, you know- that Plato guy), you simply have to read this article.

Hadot discusses one other idea in these articles that must be mentioned and that is his idea of the topos or topics of Western culture/philosophy. These are "formulae, images, and metaphors"(p.66) that have, over time, proved indispensable to many thinkers within a tradition or our culture. Hadot spent the last part of his life tracing the cultural history of some of these topics. His last book, "The Veil of Isis", is one such investigation. Several of the later articles in this collection are others. "The View from Above" is one of them and briefly traces some of the history of the exercise of learning to look down at humanity from a cosmic viewpoint.
I would also like to recommend the short article "The Sage and the World" wherein Hadot defends the relevance of the lessons he has learned from ancient philosophy to our own lived-in world.

It's funny. There are many similarities (as well as enormous differences) between Hadot and Leo Strauss. I think they would have found much to talk about with each other. One of the things they both emphasized was the idea of the difference between the sage and the philosopher. The sage was seen in Hellenistic times as the fully realized wise man. Let us just say there are few of those. The philosopher, on the other hand, was she who chased after wisdom as something loved. I like this idea. Among other things, it brings out the theme of the erotic which is so present in ancient philosophy. Well, my friends, Pierre Hadot was a philosopher. In his books, he not only chases after wisdom, he entices us to do so as well. In doing so, he makes this reader, at least, examine my own way of being in the world. For me, reading Hadot had been to hold up a mirror to my own life and to realize the need for a spiritual exercise program. I gots some work to do.

Read Hadot before reading the Stoics/Epicureans directly

This book is outstanding. This is exactly why there are professional scholars. I've read Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius many times, but can't say I've understood them as well as after reading Pierre Hadot. In fact it's a little embarrassing that I thought I understood them well before. After reading Hadot I can see how much I was missing. I got the general idea, but things are much clearer now. It's like putting on a new pair of glasses, everything suddenly comes into focus.
If you like the Stoics and Epicureans, or just ancient philosophy in general, you must read this book. If you're curious about the right way to live, read this book. I'm moving on the the rest of Hadot's books next

Thought Provoking, Well Researched

This is one of the best books that I have read in quite some time. Focused mostly on the Hellenistic era but also going as far back as Socrates and as far forward as Nietzsche and Foucault.

The book seeks to elucidate philo-sophy (love of wisdom) not as a rarefied field of study but as a way of life consistent with making us one with the universe.

The book, originally in French, is not a light-weight self help book as its title may imply. But is instead a deep study of the origins of "spiritual exercises" from Socrates to the Hellenists (Stoicism, Epicureanism, and neo-Platonism) and onward to the early Christians.

Hadot's main thesis is that philosophy has been gutted in the modern era to focus on rarefied discourse and study at the expense of it serving as an aid in helping us to lead better lives. Using abundant examples from the likes of Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius, Hadot makes a significant and resounding case for a re-emergence of philosophy from the walls of academia, where it has been penned and chained for the last 1500 years. While knowledge of ancient philosophy is not strictly required for reading this book, those with this knowledge will get the most from it.

I have studied the Stoics and Epicureans about as much as is possible for a layman, and I found this book indispensable in making clear the teachings of Epicurus and Zeno, as well as the early Christian scholars. Hadot shows clearly that the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius are grounded in philosophy going back at least as far as Socrates.

I recommend this book in the most high fashion to anyone who seeks wisdom and loves a good mental workout.
