Democracy Defended (Contemporary Political Theory), by Gerry Mackie

Is there a public good? A prevalent view in political science is that democracy is unavoidably chaotic, arbitrary, meaningless, and impossible. Such scepticism began with Condorcet in the eighteenth century, and continued most notably with Arrow and Riker in the twentieth century. In this powerful book, Gerry Mackie confronts and subdues these long-standing doubts about democratic governance. Problems of cycling, agenda control, strategic voting, and dimensional manipulation are not sufficiently harmful, frequent, or irremediable, he argues, to be of normative concern. Mackie also examines every serious empirical illustration of cycling and instability, including Rikers famous argument that the US Civil War was due to arbitrary dimensional manipulation. Almost every empirical claim is erroneous, and none is normatively troubling, Mackie says. This spirited defence of democratic institutions should prove both provocative and influential.

Review
"...path-breaking, thorough, and innovative...It will be 'must reading' for all who wish to understand democracy given the work in the social field over the last 50 years." Social Justice Research, Joe Oppenheimer

"This brilliant counterrevolutionary book makes a frontal attack on the widely accepted claim that Kenneth Arrow's impossibility theorem for social choice shows democracy to be impossible, arbitrary, and meaningless. In delightfully direct and jargon-free language, Mackie demolishes the theoretical and empirical bases for this claim, notably in the strong version defended by William Riker and his students. His careful and exhaustive re-examination of all the instances on which Riker based his arguments is particularly valuable. At the same time, he puts up a strong defense--two cheers at least--for the institutions of representative democracy. After this vigorous and rigorous attack, social choice theory will never be the same again." Jon Elster, Columbia University

"This is a true tour de force. Gerry Mackie has looked at many of William Riker's best known stories about great manipulations in American history. In almost every case, Riker's story does not hold up--but Mackie's story is as interesting as Riker's. This book is a must read for everyone interested in analytical narratives and political theory." Iain McLean, University of Oxford

"Democracy Defended, by Gerry Mackie, is the latest shooting star in the political science galaxy... [T]he book contains many terrific points, as important to lawyers who think about appellate decisions, legislative intent, and voting law as to the book's intended audience." Saul Levmore, Dean, University of Chicago Law School, for University of Chicago Law Review

"Mackie does an awfully nice job explaining and exploring Arrow's work....Mackie's chapter (six) on [Arrow's independence] condition, standing alone, is more than worth the price of this hefty volume. As careful as he is with Arrow's formal theory, though, Mackie's passionate interest -- and original contribution -- lies in shredding the extensions and empirical applications offered by the late William Riker and his followers at Rochester....Mackie's response [to Riker's most famous example of cycling] is so devastating, so mortifying, that I stopped breathing when I read it....Mackie is beyond tenacious, he is the Inspector Javert of polemics, in ruthlessly tracking down and demolishing every single purported instance of cycling Riker offered, as well as other instances floating around in the literature. His reexamination of the historical record in these cases is original and profound....Not many heretical tracts are as fun as this one, either." Don Herzog, University of Michigan Law School, for University of Chicago Law Review

A Challenge to Orthodoxy
By mungowitz
Democracy Defended is going to be a very important book. In some ways, it harks back to the old "Why So Much Stability?" paper by Tullock in Public Choice in 1981. In other ways, it represents a careful reconsideration of claims, both theoretical and empirical, made by William Riker and others about the incoherence of democracy. But the book is more than that, representing a genuinely original contribution to democratic theory in the largest sense. One can find strands of Rousseau, Habermas, and other defenders of deliberation and democracy, but the perspective is Mackie's own.
The best way to represent the viewpoint succinctly is this: there are two very different ways that democracy might be attacked.
* The first is that, just as Rousseau claimed, if people act selfishly and egoistically government may not work very well. The 51% can expropriate wealth from the other 49%, and even make then slaves. Taxes, public policy, and basic rights may be skewed and distorted. The majority can tyrannize over the minority.
* The second is that there may be a fundamental incoherence in group "will," even if each individual is doing the best he can to achieve the best for the group, rather than himself or herself. All that is required is disagreement in judgments about the right thing to do.
The two require very different defenses, and since the argument is very lengthy I will only summarize it briefly. Mackie argues that the main empirical claim, that cycles should be immanent, is simply false. In fact, it is difficult to find even a single example of a true cycle in either elections or legislative processes. He exhaustively tracks down the background behind every supposed example, and shows that there are important questions about the validity of the evidence marshaled in support of the claims of cyclists. Though I am myself not a fan of Mackie's conclusion, I found myself persuaded that the counterattack he mounts, and the evidence he presents, is very powerful, and should make those who have argued that cycles are everywhere rethink our positions.
He also argues that democracy, both in terms of institutions and the dispositions of participants, simply does not look like the social choice models portray it. Both in terms of personal experience, and a discussion of democracy more generally, he makes a very detailed and closely reasoned defense of a broader conception of democracy, one in which narrow self-interest and strategic action plays a smaller role than that usually described in rational choice theory.
A strikingly original, well-researched, and profound work.

Suspect sociology of democracy
By John C. Landon
This is an important challenge to the various writings of Arrow and his social choice theorems on democracy. And it is long overdue. The material is not easily accessible save by someone in the field and this compendium is invaluable for a relative outsider aware of this scholarship but unable to proceed into the details. As the author notes, one can only wonder at the influence of the views of Arrow and his followers on a whole generation of students now global executives, stewards of industry, and diplomats. The apparent rigor of this kind of mathematicized sociology hides the often spurious character of these exercises in ideology (with Neo-Classical eonomics the champ in this deceptive vein). The behind the scenes influence of this kind of thinking needs an alertness to its actual effects, which aren't speculative, e.g. the Chinese propaganda system is known to exploit this thinking for its legitimation purposes.

Surprisingly Good Gay Teen Comic
By Contradiction
No idea how I found this comic but I really enjoyed it. Two teenaged boys coming together in a romantic high school tale. Not overly sexual but there are enough adult themes (and drawings) that I wouldn't advise the book for younger readers. I had read some of the online strips which inspired me to purchase the comic. Once you get past the cost, the biggest downside is that it's only Volume 1 and it left me wanting to read more. Not going to lie, I felt the price is pretty expensive for what it is. Like books by Alex Woolfson and Greg Fox, I think $20 is a much fairer price point. But I appreciate the challenges of independent publishers (which I'm assuming is the case here) and there's quite a bit of content. Looking forward to the next Volume. .

A hidden gem - a sweet and relatable story constructed with beautiful artwork.
By CoolieDude
This book is so great! Let's see.
Art (check - beautifully demonstrated, I absolutely love the style and adore the way you make expression)
Story (check - very sweet and I love the build-up which gives nice background to the main characters)
Character (check - lovable and relatable, I can see part of me in each of the character)
Conversation (check - feel real, not forced - each conversation contains lots of information about the characters and stories about them)
Book quality (check - nice construction)
The only subpar detail, which I do not really think is a drawback, is the sex scene. It feels a tad static, but it fits the overall tone of the story.
I truly hope there will be a follow up.
This really deserve more attention.

Reason in a Dark Time: Why the Struggle Against Climate Change Failed -- and What It Means for Our Future, by Dale Jamieson

From the 1992 Rio Earth Summit to the 2009 Copenhagen Climate Conference there was a concerted international effort to stop climate change. Yet greenhouse gas emissions increased, atmospheric concentrations grew, and global warming became an observable fact of life.

In this book, philosopher Dale Jamieson explains what climate change is, why we have failed to stop it, and why it still matters what we do. Centered in philosophy, the volume also treats the scientific, historical, economic, and political dimensions of climate change. Our failure to prevent or even to respond significantly to climate change, Jamieson argues, reflects the impoverishment of our systems of practical reason, the paralysis of our politics, and the limits of our cognitive and affective capacities. The climate change that is underway is remaking the world in such a way that familiar comforts, places, and ways of life will disappear in years or decades rather than centuries.

Climate change also threatens our sense of meaning, since it is difficult to believe that our individual actions matter. The challenges that climate change presents go beyond the resources of common sense morality -- it can be hard to view such everyday acts as driving and flying as presenting moral problems. Yet there is much that we can do to slow climate change, to adapt to it and restore a sense of agency while living meaningful lives in a changing world.

From Booklist
If one listens to popularity-hungry politicians and optimistic environmentalists, there is still ample hope for humanity to halt global warming in its tracks. Yet a growing number of atmospheric scientists are saying it’s already too late and the real debate now is over how the earth’s denizens can adapt. Jamieson, an environmental studies and philosophy professor at New York University, falls squarely in the latter camp, pointing out that, despite a last-ditch, internationally attended Copenhagen Climate Conference in 2009, worldwide greenhouse-gas emissions have only increased. Since, in his view, catastrophic ecological damage is a foregone conclusion, Jamieson here narrows the issues down to moral and economic concerns. One of his key arguments involves getting us all to acknowledge both our personal responsibility in creating this global crisis and our collective ability to still make a difference. Although not intended as a rallying cry for arresting climate change, Jamieson’s work is nonetheless an invaluable contribution to the dialogue about how to minimize the inevitable social and environmental devastation that looms large in our future. --Carl Hays

Review

"Jamieson's ethical approach deserves serious consideration, especially since it manages to take our relationship with nature seriously while avoiding the debate about whether the value in nature is intrinsic or instrumental... wide-ranging and ambitious" --Journal of Applied Philosophy

"he has a gift for translating complexities into simple, often arresting terms, and is able to make even familiar material seem fresh...The result is a book that is uncommonly accessible to nonspecialists, and will resonate even among those working in the trenches of climate policy, for whom works of pure philosophy often seem somewhat beside the point...This is sound advice not only for economists but for anyone writing about climate change. Reason in a Dark Time succeeds so well because Jamieson, with very few exceptions, practices what he preaches." --Ethics and International Affairs

"A book that does justice to the full tragedy and weird comedy of climate change is Reason in a Dark Time, by the philosopher Dale Jamieson. Ordinarily, I avoid books on the subject, but a friend recommended it to me last summer, and I was intrigued by its subtitle, "Why the Struggle Against Climate Change Failed-And What It Means for Our Future"; by the word "failed" in particular, the past tense of it. I started reading and couldn't stop...I'd expected to be depressed by "Reason in a Dark Time" but I wasn't. Part of what's mesmerizing about climate change is its vastness across both space and time. Jamieson, by elucidating our past failures and casting doubt on whether we'll ever do any better, situates it within a humanely scaled context."
-- Jonathan Franzen in The New Yorker

"An invaluable contribution to the dialogue about how to minimize the inevitable social and environmental devastation that looms large in our future."
-- Booklist

"This book is a must read by all who wish to bring reason to the challenges [of climate change] we are going to face very soon, whether we want to or not..." --Green Energy Times

"Jamieson provides a wide-ranging account, looking at the lack of political incentives to act and at the influence of organised climate denial...Jamieson concludes with some observations about things we can definitely do for the better right away (abandon coal), and with shrewd reflections on living with the knowledge that we flunked the climate test." --Times Higher Education

"A highly informative, wise, and thought-provoking discussion of some of the greatest problems that humanity faces, and of some possible solutions."
--Derek Parfit, All Souls College, Oxford

"Dale Jamieson is a philosopher and a realist. He was been working on climate change for a quarter of a century, alongside both scientists and policy makers. He argues that we are heading down a dangerous road and will likely have to face a much more difficult world. But he also argues that there is so much we can do individually and collectively to make a difference, and warns that the best must not be the enemy of the good. This is a very thoughtful and valuable book and should be read by all those who would wish to bring reason to a defining challenge of our century."
--Professor Lord Nicholas Stern

"No one but Dale Jamieson could write an eminently readable book about climate change that ranges over the full sweep of the problem from the historical to the ethical, the scientific to the political. By placing this vexing issue into the broader context of the human condition, Jamieson guides the reader's mood from pessimism to optimism, and finally realism about our prospects."
--Michael Oppenheimer, Albert G. Milbank Professor of Geosciences and International Affairs, Princeton University

"Part requiem for our failed hopes and part vision for our uncertain future, this remarkably far-ranging work by the philosopher who has thought longest and hardest about climate change could inspire fruitfully radical reassessment of our attitudes toward the most far-reaching challenge of our lifetimes. The climate is changing -- can we?"
--Henry Shue, Centre for International Studies, University of Oxford

"Although Jamieson characterizes the Enlightenment faith in reason as a "dream," and recognizes that it is in particularly short supply in climate change policy, he is very much a man of the Enlightenment himself - hence his title, with its emphasis on reason, even in dark times, and his stated goal, which is to make readers think. Reason in a Dark Time succeeds admirably in this task. Although much of the ground Jamieson explores is well trodden, he has a gift for translating complexities into simple, often arresting terms, and is able to make even familiar material seem fresh." -- Ethics and International Affairs

"Forget learning about the science of climate change; read this book to learn about society and perhaps do a little bit of soul-searching. Summing Up: Highly recommended. " --CHOICE

"Reason in a Dark Time by Dale Jamieson (Oxford): precisely because it's the first book to be fully honest about climate change, it's the one book on the subject that stands a chance of not depressing you. It may even change your life." -- Jonathan Franzen, The Guardian, recommended as "Best Holiday Reads 2015"

"Jamieson's book is a compelling, sophisticated, and highly learned contribution to climate scholarship written for an interdisciplinary and more general audience. In style, it is characteristically clear, well organized, and incisive yet suffused with a warm, humane sensibility and good humor. It is not afraid to make suggestive comments and signal broad programmatic change. In content, the book contains magisterial overviews of the history of the climate problem, climate economics, and obstacles to action." -- Ethics

Comprehensive overview
By Jenny B
Dale Jamieson coherently covers a lot of ground in this book and has many good footnotes. He explains the history of climate change politics and economic shortcomings well, but his consideration of the causes and of climate change philosophy differentiate it from others in the climate policy field.

I especially liked Jamieson's description of the role of science in US society. He notes the gulf in perspective between scientists and public policy makers caused by the requirements for "success" in their fields. An amusing anecdote about the Supreme Court case for the EPA's regulation of CO2 was also apt; Jamieson explains that Justice Scalia mixed up the words 'troposphere' and 'stratosphere'. After being corrected by a scientist, he replied, "Whatever. I'm not a scientist," to laughter among the "sympathetic" audience of lawyers and journalists (62). Jamieson considers how the audience would have taken a similar quip if it had been about a basis of economics or politics, such as "Supply and Demand. Whatever, I'm not an economist." He asserts that US society generally doesn't prioritize scientific bases, and our ignorance "can lead people to both overestimate what science can do and feel betrayed when it fails to live up to these pretensions" (63).

Two parts of the book stood out to me as having room for improvement. In his explanation of climate change philosophy and values, he focuses exclusively on human impacts for future generations and for people in developing countries. His being an environmental philosopher, I thought it was interesting that he never mentions philosophical ideas related to ecological and non-human impacts in the present and future. This significantly narrows his focus to human society, as may have been his preference. Jamieson also refers several times in the book to the "biggest problem" in addressing climate change: a psychological component. While he explains other factors in some depth, he addresses this in only two pages. Mentioning some of the research in environmental and climate change psychology and communication (Robert Gifford, Kari Norgaard, Susan Moser) could have significantly contributed to this section.

Jamieson concludes that we will continue to address climate change in a piecemeal and messy fashion. Overall, I think he does a great job in explaining many aspects of climate change with thought and depth.

Enlightenment ideals for a new age
By Ideophile
Jamieson points a critical eye toward where we find ourselves with respect to climate change, how we got here, and what we can do going forward. The basis of his thinking can be boiled down to this: human ethics, morality, and institutions were never designed to handle problems such as climate change where cause and effect are distributed across space, time, and actors. For example, it's really hard to think ethically when the impacts of decisions made today may be a thousand years in the future; it's really hard to feel morally culpable for turning up the thermostat even though collectively this may result in the suffering and/or death of uncountable people; and it sounds a bit off when our best economic models claim that European explorers got a raw deal when they bought Manhattan for $24. Human beings were built to react to cause and effect when and where they see it - so one of the key problems with climate change is that it's so hard to see the when and the where (let alone the who).

As far as presentation goes, the bulk of his book reflects on how we got here. Jamieson takes us through the early days of climate science, the recognition of climate change as a problem, and the institution of climate diplomacy. He discusses how climate diplomacy failed due to the disconnects between politics and science, the disconnects between public good and corporate good, etc. He also discusses the limitations of economics when applied to climate change, especially when it comes to valuing present and future lives. The takeaway is that since diplomacy and economics have failed to solve the climate change problem in the past we shouldn't expect them to be the solution going forward.

The next subjects he takes up are ethics and morality. As with diplomacy and economics, he discusses where human ethics and morality fall short when it comes to climate change. He surveys a variety of recent attempts at establishing a new ethics for climate change, but identifies a range of challenges that each must address before any of them can be considered coherent.

The last part of the book looks forward. Unfortunately, this is the shortest (and in my opinion the weakest) part of the book. The chapter titled "Living with Climate Change" is by far the shortest chapter in the book. Jamieson's reflections on measuring meaning in terms of activity (vs. results) and cultivating a respect for nature seem less convincing than any of his earlier arguments (even for someone like me who would emphasize the same). The final chapter provides a Confucian-like "rectification of names", a discussion on how future policy discussions may play out in terms of those names, and also introduces Jamieson's seven principles for the way forward. Readers with an activist bent may find this chapter useful in that it points out how people in climate change discussions often talk past each other by using the same names to mean different things as well as how the conversation will likely turn toward emphasizing "adaptation" and "geoengineering" now when in fact "abatement" and "mitigation" remain critical elements of any solution. His seven principles for the way forward, however, are similar in brevity to his earlier discussions of meaning and respect for nature - so while my previous education allows me to agree with each of his principles, they're not quite the arguments you might use to sway a fence sitter (let alone a staunch denier).

All in all, a great discussion on how we got to where we find ourselves with respect to climate change. The latter part of book that deals with the way forward, while a little weak, can itself be taken as outlining a way forward for further reading (as opposed to being a final word on the subject).

What to do when prevention fails
By Linda
Reason in a Dark Time: Why the Struggle Against Climate Change Failed--and What It Means for Our Future addresses the world's options in the face of irreversible climate change. The author, Dale Jamieson, discusses the psychological, social, and political reasons why climate change is especially difficult for humans to address because the changes that will lead to the extinction of hundreds of species and the untimely deaths of millions of people are not obvious right now. We are, as individuals, mostly capable of responding to immediately perceivable threats, like lions or falling trees. Indeed, people commonly refuse to respond to unmistakable and ongoing catastrophes. They rebuild after floods in the floodplain. They rebuild after an earthquake on the fault. They rebuild on the beach after a hurricane. Yes, they may mitigate future damages by passing laws requiring sturdier buildings or putting in breakwaters, but mostly they go on as if the most recent catastrophe will never happen again. And they seem genuinely shocked when the next catastrophe happens. How then can we expect a timely, effective response to a catastrophe that is happening in slow motion and will culminate in the future? How can we expect a timely, effective response when the people who must change their behavior are not going to bear the brunt of the catastrophe?

We could act now to mitigate some of the consequences of climate change, but that seems unlikely given the world-wide response that would be needed to be effective. So we are left with adapting locally. California is adapting to drought by rationing water, encouraging people to xeriscape instead of planting thirsty lawns, starting to recycle waste water, and looking into desalination. Unfortunately, these interventions are being presented as temporary, "until the drought is over". It is more likely that drought is now the usual and the occasional wet year the exception. Eventually, those who can will leave an increasingly hot and dry California for cooler places.

Climate change is like being diagnosed with a chronic disease. By the time the diagnosis is made, it is far too late to address the causes of the disease. Doctors may mitigate the symptoms with medications or procedures, but they can't cure the disease. The patient is going to have to adapt--take the medication, change activities, food, what gives meaning to life.

Garments Against Women (The New Series), by Anne Boyer

Poetry. Literary Nonfiction. Women's Studies. GARMENTS AGAINST WOMEN is a book of mostly lyric prose about the conditions that make literature almost impossible. It holds a life story without a life, a lie spread across low-rent apartment complexes, dreamscapes, and information networks, tangled in chronology, landing in a heap of the future impossible. Available forms—like garments and literature—are made of the materials of history, of the hours of women's and children's lives, but they are mostly inadequate to the dimension, motion, and irregularity of what they contain. It's a book about seeking to find the forms in which to think the thoughts necessary to survival, then about seeking to find the forms necessary to survive survival and survival's requisite thoughts.

Adventures of a Bystander, by Peter F. Drucker Foundation for Nonprofit Management

"It is [a] belief in diversity and pluralism and the uniqueness of each person that underlies all my writings . . . " -from the Preface.

Regarded as the most influential and widely read thinker on modern organizations and their management, Peter Drucker has also established himself as an unorthodox and independent analyst of politics, the economy, and society. A man of impressive scope and expertise, he has paved significant inroads in a number of key areas, sharing his knowledge and keen insight on everything from the plight of the employee and the effects of technology to the vicissitudes of the markets and the future of the new world order. Adventures of a Bystander is Drucker's rich collection of autobiographical stories and vignettes, in which this legendary figure paints a portrait of his remarkable life, and of the larger historical realities of his time.

In a style that is both unique and engaging, Drucker conveys his life story -from his early teen years in Vienna through the interwar years in Europe, the New Deal era, World War II, and the postwar period in America-through intimate profiles of a host of fascinating people he's known through the years. Their personal histories are, as Drucker tells us, the beads for which his own life serves as the string. A colorful group, these diverse, often unpredictable, always multidimensional individuals were chosen "because each of them, in his or her own highly personal way, reflects and refracts the thirty crucial years from the end of World War I to the first post-World War II decade-the thirty years that largely formed the world in which we now live."

An amazing pageant of characters, both famous and otherwise, springs from these pages, illuminating and defining one of the most tumultuous periods in world history. Along with bankers and courtesans, artists, aristocrats, prophets, and empire-builders, we meet members of Drucker's own family and close circle of friends, among them such prominent figures as Sigmund Freud, Henry Luce, Alfred Sloan, John Lewis, and Buckminster Fuller. Playing to perfection their roles as those who "reflect and refract" the customs, beliefs, and attitudes of the times, these singular personalities lend Adventures of a Bystander a striking "you-are-there" feel.

A brief encounter with Freud becomes the catalyst for an absorbing, multidimensional description of the economics, politics, and social psychology of pre-World War II Europe. Drucker introduces us to Fritz Kraemer, a brilliant, monocle-wearing eccentric who became an influential mentor to the young Henry Kissinger. His personal memoir of Henry Luce documents the development of modern journalism, while in "The Indian Summer of Innocence," he rescues and preserves the very heart of the American experience during the last New Deal years before World War II.

Shedding light on a turbulent and important era, Adventures of a Bystander also reflects Peter Drucker himself as a man of imaginative sympathy and enormous interest in people, ideas, and history. These enthralling stories complement and complete the groundbreaking analytical writing for which he is so revered.

Luminous autobiographical stories by one of the greatest thinkers of our time

"The cast of characters among whom Drucker moves is superbly rich, and the informed glimpse he provides of a vanished social and political universe is an education in itself. Adventures of a Bystander is better than a novel, more lively than an essay, and as thoughtful as both at their best." -The Harvard Business Review.

"Adventures of a Bystander is a virtuoso performance in which Drucker displays a dazzling diversity of personal interests and knowledge, an awesome power of recall, and a crisp, highly readable writing style." -BusinessWeek.

"Adventures of a Bystander appears in a stroke to have restored the art of the memoir and of the essay. It will doubtless be a while before its like comes round again." -The Washington Post.

Amazon.com Review
For almost 60 years, Peter Drucker has been writing about everything from management and economics to philosophy and politics with an unorthodox perspective on business and society that continues to attract followers. But in the autobiographical classic Adventures of a Bystander--considered the best of his 29 books by both readers and Drucker himself--the spotlight is turned around to illuminate those he met along the way, who best embody his envisioned ideals of pluralism and diversity. Among them: Sigmund Freud, Henry Luce, Buckminster Fuller, Marshall McLuhan, and Fritz Kraemer, "the man who invented Kissinger." --Howard Rothman

Review
"Drucker's autobiography is a joy to read because of the mix of intriguing characters, momentous events and sharp insights we've come to expect from one of the most original management theorists."-Upside magazine

From the Publisher
The classic autobiography of one of the greatest thinkers in our time. This new edition of Drucker's autobiographical collection of stories and vignettes, re-introduces this classic to a wider audience of readers. As Drucker recounts his relationships with different people (famous and otherwise) throughout his life, he paints a portrait of the larger historical realities of his time, including war-torn Europe, the New Deal years, and America after World War II. This personal and engaging work also mirrors Drucker himself-a leader and thinker of infinite curiosity, imaginative sympathy, and enormous interest in people, ideas, and the forces behind them.

A RING-SIDE SEAT WITH LEADING MINDS OF THE 20TH CENTURY
By Donald Mitchell
I did not know about this book until I read Jack Beatty's THE WORLD ACCORDING TO PETER DRUCKER. I thought that the excerpts from ADVENTURES OF A BYSTANDER were the best part of Beatty's book. Thus, encouraged, I ordered a copy on Amazon.com and sat down to read. What a great surprise! I felt I knew a lot of Peter Drucker stories, from having met him many times. It looked like I had missed most of the best ones. I was also impressed to learn the places where he first learned many of his most important observations, such as the power of asking the right questions and following through (from his fourth grade teacher, Miss Sophie). There are several chapters in the book that are worth the price of the book, such as the chapters about Sigmund Freud, General Motors, Henry Luce, and the rise of Nazism in Austria and Germany. As a history major, I felt I knew a lot about the people and places he talks about, but I was wrong. I had been sold a bill of goods by people who were not there, as Professor Drucker was. I finished the book wishing he would write a longer autobiography that would capture more of Professor Drucker's remarkable life. He apparently turned down more good jobs before he was 30 than most people would ever have offered to them in 100 lifetimes. This book also helps explain why Professor Drucker has been a seminal thinker for three generations of Americans. His first bestseller in English came out when he was only 30, and only a few years away from his native Austria. What an amazing life Professor Drucker has lived! Until you read this book, you will not know how amazing, and you will have missed a wonderful book -- probably his most intriguing and interesting. Get this book now! If you have not read much of Professor Drucker's work, I suggest you read THE WORLD ACCORDING TO PETER DRUCKER next. It is an invaluable guide to all of Professor Drucker's writing.

''Systems of the nineteenth century- Marx, Freud, and Keynes - all have the synthesis between the scientific and the magical.''
By Clay Garner
“Freudian psychoanalysis represents a giant effort to hold together in one person the ultra-rationalist Freud, the child of the enlightenment, and Freud the dreamer and poet of the ‘dark night of the soul.’ . . . The systems of the nineteenth century that have had a major impact on the western world - Marx, Freud, and Keynes - all have had in common the synthesis between the scientific and the magical, and the emphasis on logic and empirical research leading to the - ‘I believe because it makes no rational sense.’’’ (97)

This personal conclusion, at the end of his chapter on Freud, examples Drucker’s willingness to offer opinions after providing background. Easy to understand. Direct without arrogance.

Preface -

“The totalitarian regimes in which everybody was to conform, to think, write, and paint the same, to be centrally controlled - the Nazi's called it ‘switched to the right track’ - were but the head of a universal current. It swept over the democracies as well.’’ (vii)

Drucker’s book “whether dealing with politics, philosophy or history’’ stresses pluralism and diversity.

“The people [here] were all chosen because each of them, in his or her own highly personal way, reflects and refracts the thirty crucial years from the end of WWI to the first post-WWII decade - the thirty years that largely formed the world in which we now live

Drucker highlights personal stories more than political movements. Nevertheless, he knows his life and everyone else, were driven by the huge undercurrents of the postwar world. This work wants to show how we got here. He succeeds (even if more can be told).

The Indian summer of innocence

The Vienna of Drucker’s youth populated the western world with thinkers who created modernity. Drucker's friends included Mises and the Polanyis. He was closer to Karl than the others. Karl wanted to condemn western civilization and praise primitivism. Researched for years - and found. . .

“it simply is not true that slave trade and slave raids were forcibly imposed by wicked outsiders on a freedom loving and harmonious black tribal society. The black kings and chieftains brought in the slavers and organized, conducted, and supported the slave raids.” (138)

Karl was ‘profoundly shocked’. Preconceived ideas are the hardest to break.

“If there was one article of the faith to which all the Polanyis subscribed it was that the ‘laissez-faire’ Liberals were wrong. . . . All Polyanis searched for another alternative, whether Otto’s early fascism, Adolph’s romantic Brazil, Mousie’s ‘rural sociology’, Micheal’s stoic, or Karl’s ‘social principles’.’’ (138)

These ideas had significant influence. But what did Karl’s serious study uncover?

“But the more delved into prehistory, primitive economics, and classical antiquity, the more proof did he find for the hated and despised market creed of Ricardo and Bentham, and also of Karl’s contemporary bogeymen, Lugwig Von Mises and Frederick Hayek.’’ (138)

This personal experience seems included to highlight the conflict of the twentieth century disputes over freedom and collectivism. Fascinating!

Another insight -

“Our society has shifted to seeing symbols as real: money, trades and deals, interest rates, and Gross National Product. Our whole society assumes, in the words of the medieval logician: that symbols have substance while the objects they represent are mere shadows.’’ (211)

What! Symbols (mental constructs) are more important than physical (observed) reality?

“Dr. Samuel Johnson once said, ‘A man is never so innocently employed as in making money.’ . . . . Dr. Johnson did not say that the man who makes money is doing good. He says did the least harm. He does not seek power, he does not seek to dominate people or to make them squirm, he does not seek to amass possessions.’’ (212)

Why?

“He is content with the symbols and lets reality go.’’

What reality?

“They were making things, scheming for power, dominating people or being dominated. They saw in money with the classical economists the ‘veil of reality’.’’

This was centuries ago. Now?

“Is the ultra-nominalism that treats symbols and images as ultimate reality, and people and things as mere shadows, still so ‘innocent’?’’ (212)

(Herbert Butterfield wrote against ‘worshipping abstract nouns’. Seems similar.)

An Insight into the Mind of Drucker
By DH
If you wanted to understand how Drucker came to many of his concepts, this book WILL give you that insight. This memoir sheds light on many of the experience he had that influenced his thoughts and many of his works. A great read on the man behind the ideas.

The Spirit of Aikido, by Kisshomaru Ueshiba, Moriteru Ueshiba

Kisshomaru Ueshiba (1921-1999), is regarded as a man who embodied the spirit of aikido, as inherited from his father, Morihei Ueshiba, akido's founder. The Spirit of Aikido is his masterpiece, and regarded as a seminal work on the discipline, and on martial arts in general. In this classic discourse, Ueshiba concisly explains the essence of aikido's philosophy and techniques.

Long available in paperback, The Spirit of Aikido will now be published in a hardcover edition, with new photos and a preface by Moriteru Ueshiba, the third and present Aikido Doshu (headmaster) and the author's son.

Aikido--a modern Japanese martial art unique in its synthesis of classic forms with a well-defined spiritual base--offers a key to the art of living naturally and unselfishly in a complicated world. This book explains it in reference to the founder's philosophy of mind--and action. In addition, the history of aikido's prewar development as a noncompetitive new martial art is described in the context of its international role.
